While Avatar still reigns supreme internationally, James Cameron's epic was dethroned domestically by Star Wars: The Force Awakens earlier this year. Now it seems that Cameron wasn't a big fan of Episode VII, insinuating that he preferred the installments that George Lucas had more of a hand in.
As EW reports, in a recent interview Cameron gave his thoughts on The Force Awakens, saying, "I have to say that I felt that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before." He added, "And it took a few baby steps forward with new characters. So for me the jury’s out. I want to see where they go with it.”
To be fair, Cameron prefaced these statements by saying that Lucas was a friend of his and that he didn't want to overstep since he has "a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams" and wants to see "where they’re taking it next.”
As it stands, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has the biggest domestic haul of all time with $936,662,225, besting Avatar's $760,507,625. Oh hey — those sequels are coming soon though...
