ScreamScape.com discusses divergent opinions within the Magic Kingdom on the Space Mountain refurbishment and its reopening date. An excerpt...

As I understand things, the plan is still to perform a complete replacement of the ride system, bring in new trains, new effects, and rebuild and retheme the loading stations. It seems the timetable for this is a little… ummm… unspecific.

At DLP in 1995, Space Mountain a la Terre au la Lune (From the earth to the moon), was Jules Verne theme, where it was like the silent movie. You were loaded up into the canon and fired into space - including smoke, a big boom and the canon recoiling each time a train was shot out (this was Disney's 1st ever launch system, paving the way for RNR COaster). In the mountain is 3 inversions and there were awesome victorian sci fi props and real sparks flew as you went through the astroids (think like the effects in Maelstrom). And there was a great Victorian moon. The score was amazing (think huge John Williams ET style totally synched to the track movements). It was one of the finest attractions Disney has ever built.

Sadly, ridership started to die off because the coaster was getting painfully rough. To renew interest, Disney launched Mission 2, with a new Supernova explosion set of projections and a Michael Griechio (sp?) Increadibles type soundtrack. The also sped up the launch. But it is even rougher now, and the heart has been ripped out.

Still a million miles better than WDW's, but it is newer so to be expected.

Rough in terms of it shakes you around as it has gotten older. It used to be supersmooth, and when it was , it was awesome (personal record - 23 trips back to back on SM!!!!)

I think SM at WDW is rough too. It has some places where it snaps forward and give you a whiplash movement. Even though I know it's coming it still does it. I have taken to actually holding my neck with one hand to prevent it. I'm sure it looks funny but, it works

Hope when the new track is laid it will be smoother.

Rent the Anthony Hopkins movie "The World's Fastest Indian" and you'll have a pretty good idea.
It the world's largest time trial racing event. It's held at the Bonneville Salt Flats every August the salt isn't under water. Last Summer my dad set and now holds the fastest open wheeled record at over 360 MPH, he did that at the age of 71 and is currently building an enclosed wheel car in hopes of going even faster, lol. There are litterally hundreds of car and motorcycle body and engine classes with records to run against, some of them under 100 MPH and some of them over 400 MPH and many many in between.
