But there are always local places to eat at that have higher quality food, and perhaps lower prices. I can tick off half a dozen in SF, and a couple in LA (although they may be gone now).

Morton's is good. Better than just ok. But there are better choices, certainly for the money.

Excellent choice, and one of my favorite restaurants in the area. And a good value for the dollar.

    Getting back on topic....

What's up with the brightly colored stringy looking things floating in the lagoon? They remind me of Fruity Pebbles floating in milk.

    Just noticed this.

If you want prime rib, your best choice is House of Prime Rib on Van Ness. They are very similar to Lawry's in LA. But they only serve as their main course prime rib, and maybe a fish dish. So, if you want steak, you won't find it here.

Food is very good. It comes with everything. No a la carte nonsense as gadzuux mentioned (and is quite correct on).

Best part, if you finish your meat (good luck, considering all the side dishes you also get) they will give you seconds. Free.

Dinner prices range from about 30 to 35 bucks, and it includes: salad, mashed potatoes or baked potato yorkshire pudding, fresh creamed spinach, and horseradish sauce.

The portions are generous. If you get the small cut, you will probably have enough to eat. If not, again, seconds are free.

Another place to eat steak is Harris Steak House, also on Van Ness, actually about a block away from House Of Prime Rib. They are a steak and seafood place.

    Here is their website:

    <a href="http://www.harrisrestaurant.com/home.html" target="_blank">http://www.harrisrestaurant.co
    m/home.html</a>

    very good place.

Also around is the Acme Chop House. It is located at ATT Park, where the giants play. They are a bit more pricey. They specialize in grass fed beef and organic vegetables. Here is a dinner menu:

    <a href="http://www.acmechophouse.com/menu_dinner.pdf" target="_blank">http://www.acmechophouse.com/m
    enu_dinner.pdf</a>

Again, not cheap, but very high quality food.

Then you have Alfred's. I like this place. About half a block from the Transamerica Pyramid on Merchant Street.

    Their website is at <a href="http://www.bestofsanfrancisco.net/alfreds.htm" target="_blank">http://www.bestofsanfrancisco.
    net/alfreds.htm</a>

They have their city dinner, it costs thirty bucks. This is from their menu:

    CITY DINNER - $30.00
Choice of: HOUSE SALAD, CAESAR SALAD, or WEDGE SALAD
Choice of: FILET MIGNON EN BROCHETTE 6oz
(or) NEW YORK STRIP MEDALLION 10oz (or)
HALF RACK OF LAMB (or) MESQUITE GRILLED PETITE SALMON FILLET
Choice of: ALFRED'S CHEESECAKE (or) CAPPUCCINO ICE CREAM PIE

Then there is Izzys. Fun place down in the Marina District. This is from their menu:

    Dinner

Dinner at IZZY'S is served with your choice of
    two of our special accompaniments.
May we suggest our specialties ( * )

    Shoe String Potatoes
    Baked Potato
    * IZZY'S own Potatoes
    Roasted Onions and Carrots
    * Creamed Spinach
    Steamed Broccoli

    Steaks and Chops

New York Sirloin Steak (dry aged 21days) 22.95
New York Sirloin Au Poivre, (with cracked pepper, cream & brandy) 23.95
    Filet Mignon 22.95
Filet Mignon Mediallions Au Poivre, (with cracked pepper, cream & brandy) 23.95
Steak Kebob (with sauted mushrooms) 17.95
    Blackened Filet, Cajun Style 22.95
    Marinated Skirt Steak 15.95
    Veal Chop (T-Bone) 23.95
    Blackened Hamburger Steak 9.50
Pork Chops with Cinnamon Apples 16.95
Loin Lamb Chops two 18.95 three 22.95

Prime Rib served Friday, Saturday & Sunday only (Limited Quantity) 19.95

It's a very popular place in SF.

So those are some. There are others. Of course SF has Morton's and Ruth Chris' too. Been to both of those, too.

Why are all my favorite restaurants gone:
Hot House, El Sombrero, Doggie Diner, and Hippos? Well, at least I can still get a nice hot plate of Buffalo stew at Tommy's Joint.
Why was the Cliff House restored? I know it was falling apart, but it's just not the same anymore.
Why must you travel 100 blocks on Van Ness before you are allowed to make a left turn?
Well, I have more, but that's enough for now.

    To keep this on topic:
I won't be riding the Subs. But, I'm so glad that there will be something going on in the lagoon again. And I'm thrilled that there will be no FP offered.

And if you were to visit the Morton's and Ruth's Chris steakhouses here in Bethesda, Maryland, you'll find them full of families out for find dining--not a lot of jerky businessmen who think they're wasting their client's (or bosses') money.

Because it was losing money, was filthy, and scary.

"Why are all my favorite restaurants gone:

    No money.

"Why was the Cliff House restored? I know it was falling apart, but it's just not the same anymore."

I wouldn't say restored. I would say ruined. It is completely sterile there now.

"Why must you travel 100 blocks on Van Ness before you are allowed to make a left turn?"

You can make left turns every few blocks on Van Ness. If you need to make a left onto a street where you can't make a left turn, make three rights.

19th and Market are the worst streets for No Left Turn. There, you just make the three right turns, and it solves the problem.

I meant it as it is in every city, and you know what you are going to get when you go there.

Some people like eating at McDonald's. has to be a lot of them, too.

back to off topic: The best steak-house experience I ever had was at a place called "Jamiel's" in, I think, Tulsa Oklahoma. The place is actually in a converted house in some neighborhood somewhere. It's a local place that is super popular, and not part of a chain. Believe it or not, it's actually a "Lebanese" styled steakhouse. I guess there was a heavy Lebanese population concentrated in that area of Tulsa, for whatever reason.

We had to stand in line outside in the front yard for two hours before we were able to get a seat. Once inside, you are standing in the foyer of the house before you are brought back to the room where your table is. The first courses are mediteranien styled, with salads, flat breads, hummus, etc. Then you get your main course... steak and potatoes, and the like.

I got a Filet Mignon, and it was great. All the meat is flavored with the special Lebanese styled seasonings. It was a really unique place.
