That's why outdoor statues are so often made out of brass. They weather well. The brass gives the whole thing that hand-hammered and riveted look, much more a product of Jules Verne's era. And even a 200 pounder will float, if the original model is water tight. Or if it contains an air tight core. There must be pictures somewhere of the model actually being used on the set.

This of course means that yes the boat was underwater...alot. It was also filmed on a Soundstage using smoke effects for the dry for wet. and yes there are stills of the model in the rig. As a matter of fact , if you have the dvd 2 disc set, there are extensive galleries. This has a few pics of the Nautilus suspended over the water tank...take a look Will
