It's interesting to read the reviews of Oz from '39. You might be surprised how many lukewarm reviews or even pans it got. More than one reviewer thought its whimsy was leaden, and that MGM was just trying to ape the success of Snow White (the top-grossing film of '37-38). Its reputation didn't become what it is today until its repeated television airings. Of course, I think the TV airings just showed what was there all along, and that it's a fine film. But it's interesting how the reputation of a film can wax and wane over the years.

I might not be explaining this well, but that's what helped to raise the movie above just another noir potboiler.

Way too violent. But I realize other people love it. As I said, to each his own.

It seems like the people who made the list don't understand the context or historical contribution these films might make to either the art of filmmaking itself or the the culture. It's like when people get up in arms about Birth of a Nation. It's racist, misogynist, and has an appalling pro-KKK message. But it still ranks as the most radically innovative film ever made. Griffiths pioneered concepts that today we don't even think twice about - simultaneous storylines, flashbacks, etc.< excellent point right back at ya....written like a film student...

The graphic and shocking violence advanced the storyline and was not inserted gratuitously. 3 scenes still haunt me after 10+ years. Even though I find Pulp Fiction to be one of Hollywood's masterpieces I wish I would not have seen three of those scenes.
