I actually put in Snow White to see what you wacky LPers would say about it (like Dug for example), but apparently it didn't work as well as I hoped. :(

    Oh well...

There are - what? several hundred films released in this country alone each year? If we all felt the same as to our tastes in films, there would only be about 27 films released each year.

And that might actually be a pleasant change.

    No, no and no.

The original cost of Oz was $2.7 million, and on first release earned $3 million. In 1939 dollars, that was far from a "resounding flop." Critical reviews were decidedly mixed, but audiences turned out in droves. Because Oz was geared toward children, ticket prices were lower than most films that cost as much. (Snow White suffered the same handicap, but was far, far more popular.)

Oz definitively crossed the line to profitibility in its first re-release in 1948, when it earned an additional $1.5 million. It was re-released a third time before it began annual airings on TV.

As was pointed out before, whether a film is popular is not an indication of its quality. But the fact is that Oz was always popular, and remains popular to this day.

Overrated? Not at all, not at all. It deserves every accolade it gets.

My problem with Titanic was I'd heard *so* much about it that by the time I finally saw it all I could think was "this didn't really warrant all that hype". So, definitely overrated in my opinion!

Hey - Star Wars has some of the worst dialogue in history, and yet it's my fav film (and I know I am not alone).

Don't get me started. I do like the original trilogy better than the prequels. But I've got news for people - the writing always sucked, they just didn't notice because they were kids or they were too busy being awed by the then-revolutionary special effects.

Don't believe me? Listen to C-3PO in Empire. No way, and I mean NO WAY, that dialogue is any better than anything in the prequels.

Look up "re-cut trailers" on wikipedia to find a million of them. YouTube has a lot as well. I found that one when someone here posted a link to "Scary Mary."

That is usually how movies get dubbed "overrated", and the reverse is true also ... sometimes I wish I could erase in my mind what I've heard about a movie before I've seen it.
