ARE BLUEBERRIES GOOD FOR YOUR MEMORY?

Everyone is searching for the perfect memory enhancer. The list of foods that are mentioned as memory helpers is a long one, including broccoli, carrots, onions, tomatoes, apples, pomegranates, soybeans, oysters, turkey, salmon, tuna, peanuts, almonds, and blueberries.

But only the latter have some real potential. Blueberries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants. The specific compounds they contain are called anthocyanins.

Although there isn’t a great deal of research on blueberries’ long-term antiaging benefits, recent studies have shown that they may protect against or reverse some age-related memory loss.

CAN YOU BREAST-FEED WITH FAKE BOOBS?

Despite the large number of breast augmentations, few medical studies look at this issue. But the available ones clearly indicate a greater incidence of insufficient lactation among augmented women compared with non-augmented women.

The type of surgical approach is especially important in determining whether breast-feeding remains possible. In most breast augmentations, one of three types of incisions is made: an incision underneath the breast, an incision around the lower edge of the nipple (areola), or an incision within the armpit.

An incision around the lower edge of the nipple was most significantly associated with lactation insufficiency. Surgical technique is also very important because your ability to breast-feed may be impaired when too many milk ducts are severed.

In 2004, approximately 334,000 breast augmentations were performed, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The largest percentage occur in women between the ages of 19 and 34.

WHY DOES SUCKING ON HELIUM MAKE YOUR VOICE SOUND FUNNY?

Helium, a colorless, odorless gas, is one of the so-called noble gases (dubbed “noble†because of their rarity). But the noble moniker can seem a bit ridiculous when you hear a grown man at a child’s party inhaling helium from a balloon, and giggling like a five-year-old when he hears his own squeaky, cartoonlike voice.

Helium causes this voice change by altering the environment where sound is formed. In normal conditions, the voice makes sounds using the vocal cords, two thin muscles stretched across the trachea, which vibrate and release pulses or waves of air into the throat. These waves are interpreted as sound. If the composition of the air is changed, so too is the way the vocal cords vibrate. Since helium is lighter than air, it makes the vocal cords vibrate faster, which causes the higher pitch we hear.

List of our favorite high-pitched voices: Tweety Bird, Tiny Tim, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Megan Mullally, and Mike Tyson.

CAN YOU GET THE FLU FROM A FLU SHOT?

The flu shot contains inactivated viruses which have been killed, so the answer is no, you can’t get the flu from a flu shot.

The shot is designed to allow your body to develop protection (antibodies) without you actually getting sick. The development of the antibodies happens about two weeks after receiving the vaccine. (Up to that point, you are still at risk of getting the flu.)

There are minor side effects, however, including soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, low grade fever, and body aches.

The flu vaccine also doesn’t provide 100 percent protection against getting the flu. Experts try to predict the strain for that year in order to match the vaccine with the virus, but as you probably know by now, experts aren’t always right.

WHY DO YOU LOSE YOUR SENSE OF TASTE WHEN YOUR NOSE IS STUFFED?

Humans can recognize as many as 10,000 different scents. Taste, on the other hand, is limited to four basic categories: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter.

Around 75 percent of what we perceive as taste actually comes from our sense of smell. Each food or flower gives off odor molecules that our brain can recognize. So it’s no surprise that when your nose is stuffed, your taste suffers.

The disorder in which you lose your sense of smell is called anosmia. It usually is just temporary and comes from a sinus infection or a blockage of the nose. But anosmia can also be a permanent condition, resulting from head injury or chronic infection which destroys the olfactory nerve.

    HANSEN’S DISEASE

It doesn’t sound nearly as bad when it’s called Hansen’s as it does when it’s called leprosy, but there’s no need to be scared in either case. Discovered in Norway in 1873 by Dr. Gerhard H.A. Hansen, Hansen’s disease (or leprosy) is an infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae.

The infection is treated with antibiotics, and although the treatment takes from six months to two years, it makes even the most severe cases noninfectious within a few days or weeks.

Approximately 95 percent of the world’s population has a natural protection against Hansen’s disease, and will not get the disease even if they are exposed. So don’t worry about winding up in a leper colony.
