I guess Disney has been hit by much higher costs in food/beef than say McDonald's ...

I know I'm going to get skewered for this one, but I don't think the prices of some of WDW's meals have increased all that much. Last time I ate at McDonald's (which was probably about 6 months ago) a quarter pounder meal ran me about $6.50. A cheeseburger basket at Riverside cost me under $9 last week. I don't think that's all that much of a price increase. Maybe I'm not so shocked by things like that because I live in the middle of a tourist area. If I go to the Quarter for a po-boy, I'm going to pay at least $3 more for it than if I buy one at the restaurant by my house.

That $6.50 is higher than in most areas, including Central FLA ... I think by about a dollar ... and it includes fries AND a drink.

Your WDW price needs to add approximately $2 (I don't know what they're charging at food courts for a soda since I am a thief!) which brings it to over $11.

The burger and fries was $2.39 in 1993 ... a soda was 99 cents, so for about $3.75 you got the entire meal (and while I haven't had a burger there for a while, they used to be excellent and fresh ... for a while they went to burger in a bag boiled in water, but last time I checked they went back to fresh grilled).

BTW, back in '93 a McDonald's value meal in Central FLA was $2.99 (before anyone asks) So you barely paid a premium to eat at the resort and the food was certainly better.

Disney is now twice the price when you include the drink ... and that's excluding the fact that all the fast food chains within a mile of WDW have a 99 cent burger now.

The Mouse is gouging on food.

    Plain and simple.

Granted, I only had one burger basket during my trip last week (and yes, it was grilled to order) but it was a very nice sized burger; while it wasn't as good as the one at the Plaza, it was better than Mickey D's or Burger Death.

    c) (and you're going to love this one, Spirit) when you factor in the fact that the vast majority of people at the hotels have a handy-dandy refillable mug, you don't have to worry about the price of a drink.

    d) WDW prices are in line with what you'll pay for food in the French Quarter, and probably what you'll pay in other tourist traps - and that's exactly what WDW is.

How much does Universal charge for it's burgers?

The $2.39 figure was for a burger with fries ... and many people don't do both.
Most of the time I don't get fries anymore because I am trying to eat better and would rather have a salad or nothing with the burger.

I doubt VERY much that a 99 cent Double Stack at Wendy's or a $1.29 double Cheeseburger at McD's has less beef than a Disney food court one. Probably the same ... maybe less at Disney.

<<c) (and you're going to love this one, Spirit) when you factor in the fact that the vast majority of people at the hotels have a handy-dandy refillable mug, you don't have to worry about the price of a drink.>>

I don't know about your experience, obviously, but about 2-3 years ago I noticed a major drop in the number of mugs (new and reused) at Disney resorts. I believe that was when they went to $11.99 or $12.99 each (some of us bought them when they were less than $5) ... and also post DDP starting.

I didn't stay on property when I was there the week before you and, for the first time in forever I didn't bring any mugs either as I wasn't planning on dining at resort quick serve (I actually wound up at Poly where I never had a mug from anyway for my one quick serve resort meal) ... but very few folks there had mugs.

<<d) WDW prices are in line with what you'll pay for food in the French Quarter, and probably what you'll pay in other tourist traps - and that's exactly what WDW is.>>

That is the point I'll agree with the most because I know that's how many folks view it ... and to a certain extent I do agree.

I am only making an issue because their price points have finally made it to an extent that 20% discount or not, it isn't worth it to me to eat most meals on property.

They used to be priced high ... but it never seemed like gouging ... now it does. DDP is largely to blame ... if a food court meal for a family of four could wind up being $60-70, people will feel they're getting a huge deal on the plan ... vs. if that same meal was $30.

<<How much does Universal charge for it's burgers?>>

Couldn't say ... haven't had one in years because at Universal I always wind up doing full serve because their food is so good and very reasonably priced and that's before the AP discount. I would guess their prices are on par with Disney.

But again, when I am at EPCOT I don't stop from eating a burger at say Liberty Inn (just an example) because I know Le Cellier is going to give me an amazing reasonably priced steak.

When I am at IOA why would I think of getting a burger when I can go into Mythos and get food that's better than Le Cellier at vastly lower price points? I believe my last filet there in 2008 was around $18 BEFORE my discount.

At EPCOT, it's either pay $10-12 for a lousy burger, fries and Coke OR pay $35 for an a la carte steak ... so, to me, the logical choice is leave property now.

When you walk in the Merchantile of your local resort, and walk out with a sixpack of domestic beer, and a receipt for $31.50, plus tax, WHO'S the thief then!

I completely disagree, based on my trip last week and trips in the past. Very rarely, if ever, did I see fries being thrown away. If the burger came with fries, the fries were eaten. I'm not saying I sat in the food court or food service locations for hours on end, but when I did eat my 3 squares a day, I didn't see fries being tossed left and right, nor did I see many salads being eaten. Usually if I saw a salad, it was the one on my plate (and all were very good, especially the chicken caesar salad we had at Sunshine Seasons in the Land - it was delicious!)

<<I doubt VERY much that a 99 cent Double Stack at Wendy's or a $1.29 double Cheeseburger at McD's has less beef than a Disney food court one. Probably the same ... maybe less at Disney.>>

This is conjecture - you're guessing.

Mugs were still as popular as ever last week. I probably saw a maximum of 10 people not using refillable mugs during our 8 days at Riverside, and we ate at least one meal in the food court per day (and stopped in frequently to fill our mugs due to my Coke Zero habit and my mom's coffee habit).

In June my husband had the filet at Le Cellier, 2 in the afternoon (lunch prices), and it was $25, plus he ate half my lunch. I didn't share my Cheddar Cheese soup though. That was too good to share.

In 1981, we paid $60 a night for the Polynesian, my in-laws were there the same week, they stayed at the Royal Plaza, paid $80 a night and had to take the bus. How do the hotel rates at the Hotel Plaza area compare to Disney owned?

While on the topic of potatoes, when I have a baked potato I put salsa on it, instead of sour cream or butter. What does that make me? Spicy?
