    Of course, no one breaks any laws with their gun until they actually pull the trigger and kill someone. That's what I mean - we have no way to distinguish between "responsible" and irresponsible gun owners until it's too late. We do have a way to distinguish that with people who drive drunk.

    And we actively do things to reduce drunk driving and they are working. Drunk driving fatalities have fallen, and I don't anyone here on this board is opposed to tougher laws to reduce them even more.

    But ... any laws proposed to keep guns out of irresponsible and dangerous people's hands are fought tooth and nail by the NRA. Dementia and Alzheimer's are not good enough of a reason for the NRA to take someone's gun away from them. We might revoke their driver's license, but take their guns away? No siree, we can't do that.

    Yep, ecdc brings up a good point. We can legally stop someone before they harm others if they get behind the wheel of a car after drinking. It is already illegal to do so, and there are sobriety checkpoints that check every driver passing through to see whether or not they are drinking and driving.

    But God forbid we pass a law outlawing guns in public parks or in movie theaters.
