BTW... still waiting for his excuse as to why texting while driving is no big deal.

And yet alcohol remains a perfectly legal product, and any adult that wants to get some can get some. Even our experience with Prohibition should show any objective thinker that there's no way we're going to try to completely outlaw anything that so many people want to have. So let's review: there are no serious proposal to seriously ban the thing in question. Any adult who wants it can still get it. Sensible government restrictions do not prevent that, but they do prevent thousands of deaths a year. Keep going, Donny. You're making our case for us.

But far more auto deaths occur in regular accidents than drunk driving. Everyone knows that driving a car is risky as we are reminded of every day by the flowery memorials along the road. We are taught to drive defensively for this reason. We have government mandated seatbelts and airbags in cars and we are required to carry insurance. Why? Because everyone knows this is a risky activity. Now, when I go to the mall or a movie or send my kids to school, those should all be safe places. There should be no risk of death. But there is because of the proliferation of guns out there and the innumerable thousands of irresponsible gun owners. Many of us think this is unacceptable. I think my right to live trumps your right to carry a gun wherever you want in the very same way that it trumps your right to drive drunk. If we restricted guns like we restrict alcohol (just think about the police checkpoints looking for drunk drivers and imagine that set-up for unregistered gun owners!) we hypothesize that gun deaths would drop dramatically. All we ask it that you gun owners either figure out a way to reign in your own or let us test our hypothesis of tighter gun regulation. The status quo isn't acceptable.

Somehow I suspect that people who carry weapons are constantly looking for an occasion to pull them to justify their paranoid fears.
