From one of my posts on the "Question of Faith" thread: <<Life on earth is glorious. On a daily basis I am amazed at just how cool stuff is. Little stuff. I look in the backyard at my pine tree and marvel at how it is probably the tallest urban pine I've ever seen. Sure, you see pines that that big in the woods, but I've never seen one that large in an urban setting before. It always makes me smile. And big stuff. I think about how society has progressed just during my lifetime and am amazed at all that has occurred. I think about how the computer has changed my life more than any other invention of the 20th century. Not only do I make my living in that field, but is my entertainment, my travel advisor, my shopping guide. I find it hard to imagine how I ever planned a vacation without a computer. Essentially, I was never able to plan as successfully as I do now. To me, that is amazing and fun. I think about my wife and my children and how I never guessed when I was young that I would someday have such a wonderful family. My family life was not particularly happy growing up, and again I am amazed at just how fun it can be. I think about all the things I've seen... experiences I've had... things I've felt and it just blows me away. I hope people don't take this the wrong way, but to a certain extent I devote my life to having fun. I firmly believe that people are about as happy as they allow themselves to be and I find fun everywhere I can.>>

First of all, bear in mind that Vicki herself is probably not been apprised of what is going on with your request. There are a few celebrities who genuinely do not like their fans (not to name any names... but June Lockhart, fer pete's sake). There are also fans who are somewhat shy and unsure of how to deal with fans. Some celebrities are "officially" nice. And then there are the ones who enjoy meeting people and interacting. Very often these celebrities will have someone on their staff whose duties include keeping the celebrity on schedule and in forward motion. (I have done this before, actually. My task was to wade into a crowd, grasp the person [she was a gospel singer] by the hand, and announce "I am so sorry to take you away, but your car and driver are waiting." Or something like that.) Most likely, Vicki will greet people informally, but it is probably the case that specific requests are routinely turned down by someone on the staff. The note your mother's friend received sounds so much like that scenario. Likely the director of the center contacted that individual, who routinely turned it down. (I was, however, impressed with the fact that they took the time to detail the schedule. You were not, at least, given a simple brush off.) You are quite correct to not bring the gift in person. Consider sending it to her with a warm cover letter. Emphasize that you are working on a book. If you have any writing samples, or an outline, include that, as well. (You may have this address already: Vicki Lawrence 6000 Lido Avenue Long Beach, CA 90803) (Other adresses you may find interesting are here: <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/nd2/vicki_lawrence/autograph_info.html" target="_blank">http://www.angelfire.com/nd2/v icki_lawrence/autograph_info.html</a> ) On the day of the show, arrive early and scope out the layout. It sounds from the letter that you have a FOAF (Friend of a Friend) at the Center. See if she can offer any tips on likely places to wait. Explore the sound check option, but barring that find out where Vicki will arrive. (Here's an on line account of someone who met her before a show: <a href="http://home1.gte.net/lauranne/autographs.html" target="_blank">http://home1.gte.net/lauranne/ autographs.html</a> Scroll down to "Oh Mama!") If that doesn't work, stay afterward, but bear in mind that far more people hang out after a performance, and it is less likely that you will see her. As 2ny pointed out, some really good stuff has come out of this already. While it would be perfect to actually meet and make a connection with Vicki, this may not happen at this time. But don't let that spoil what you already have. Good luck, and have a GREAT time at the show!

And I would hate to make a bad impression or annoy someone before the show. This lady is running the box office though, and she told me to tell her where I'm sitting (she couldn't believe Vicki wouldn't do *anything*, and said rhetorically "I mean really, how long does it take to say 'So where's that Byron birthday boy?!'"). She said it would be best to not contact the director because he's really short and likes to go on power trips, so loves to throw official rules around. She reassured me to not give up hope, that she believes something could happen, and she's gonna do everything she can to make something happen. So I thought I'd just play it cool, wear my shirt, maybe show up a little early (but not too early), and hope for the best. And of course, if the end of the show comes and nothing has happened, then I'll ask any security folks I can find, or her son. So I'll just enjoy the show and hope for a li'l birthday miracle.
