They sometimes resort to mutilation of their own body parts and definitely go through a loathing process and they do not identify with the gender that matches their genes. It's a difficult, often painful process for families. Children go through this process long before reaching sexual maturity so it's not a sexual preference or a "choice." It just is. And referring to any human being as "IT" is callous and uncaring and speaks more about the person saying it than it does about someone who is transgendered. BTW, in the saying "calling it like it is" the "it" refers to the situation, not to another human being. It's different than referring to another human being with feelings, emotions, and pain as an "IT." Very different.

They are fantastic educators and I was honored to meet them.
