Several years ago a presentation was made at my Rotary Club by someone who had registered and ended up being matched as a donor. It was wonderful to hear about the woman whose life he ended up saving. After the meeting we were given the opportunity to sign up. All it takes is a simple blood test. After that you're registered and just need to notify them of any change in your address. Should you get a call about being a match (not ever happened to me yet) you are counseled on what will occur and you are not pressured into doing it. It requires a night in the hospital, minor discomfort in the hip for a couple days and all expenses are paid for. And, you probably save someone's life to boot. http://www.marrow.org/
