(I always fly coach--it's all I can afford.) Well, they had a great special: $500 got me upgraded to business class for the 14-hour flight. The seat in business reclined completely, feet up, and I was able to sleep comfortably--a genuine blessing since I hadn't slept for days before this. I find that United generally has acceptable food, pretty good flight attendants (male and female), the planes are pretty clean for their long flights, and so on. I will contrast this with a recent trip to Tokyo on ANA at the end of September. They now offer video on demand in coach. In order to do this, there is an ENORMOUS box under one seat in every group of seats across the aisle. This box takes up the entire are under the seat. There is literally no place to put your feet if you're over 5 feet 3 inches tall. I happened to be in one of these seats and couldn't believe you could get stuck in one of these torture situations without being forewarned. Fortunately, there was an aisle seat open at the back of the plane and I was able to move (which is rare these days). Otherwise it would have been a horror for 14 hours. I would never fly ANA again for that reason alone. I have very good luck with United, flying all over the world and the USA every year.
