Do these contestants have no shame and honor? Just great times for us viewers.

I've never seen a single episode of AI, but that doesn't mean I don't admire those who put themselves out there, risking ridicule and humiliation, for their dream. You are right about the age limit, being a load of garbage, I'll give you that.
Originally Posted By danyoung >If its about singing why is there an age limit? singing should have no sex, age, or race discrimintation. the show can not be respected because of kareoke delivery and age discrimination.< The age limits are unfortunate, but I understand them. The ultimate goal of the producers, outside of putting on a top rated show, is to create a new media star. They can much more easily do that with a young Jordan Sparks than they can with someone my age (52). I might be able to blow most of them off the stage, but at my age it would be much harder to package me as a commercially viable entertainer who can sell records to the kids. And yes, to a certain extent I can agree that it's a karaoke style competition (and if you're gonna diss something, at least spell it right!). I've always hated karaoke for the notion that anyone, regardless of talent, can get up on stage and do thier 4 minute song. But AI is so much more than that. It's a legitimate search for the best talent they can find. Some years they do better than others. This year was an especially strong one, with Danny Gokey and Alison Iraheta showing some excellent star potential. You can badmouth the show all you want. But unless you're really watching, you're in no position to judge the level of talent in the performers.

We are all here to enjoy and like I said I have watched the show in the early funny rounds. Its my understanding that !!ALL!! contestants have to come throught the first rounds. So I believe that I must have seen the ones with a real chance to win the tournament and those who are the laughing stock of the world. those Willaim Hongs are why I watch, just high quality entertainment, the rest should just get back on the bus and head home and learn real music like what Pink Floyd, M&M, Billy Joel or Radiohead did before them.
Originally Posted By Labuda "If its about singing why is there an age limit? singing should have no sex, age, or race discrimintation. the show cannot be respected because of kareoke delivery and age discrimination" Maybe they have an age limit because despite how good a singer is, a person in the 18-35 age range is HIGHLY unlikely to buy brand new music put out by a 40 year old unknown? And, guess what else? You don't run the show, 19 entertainment does. And they decide what the rules are for participation. If you don't like the artists who appear on the show, don't watch it. I don't like a lot of stuff, so I just don't pay attention to it. No skin off my back.

The contestants singing previously recorded music (or karaoke, if you must call it), is somewhat like a test. It gives the judges and the audience a chance to see if it's better than karaoke. If it's not, then those people usually don't make it to the finals. But if they are good, if not better, then they should be in the finals, get a recording contract and THEN record an original song or two, whether they wrote it or not. I don't think the millions and millions of people who watch AI share your opinion, LOWB, but you are entitled to it. Silliness, indeed...

Van Halen pumped out many other very good and !ORIGINAL! songs and Hendrix had original songs also. They are entitled to travel a beaten path for just a short distance. I cut them slack because they have already proven themeselves with other recordings. Idols have not done originals from what I have seen, so Apples and oranges(((see how those phrases can come back to haunt sometimes)))

But I am a fan of AI, and your continuing comments indicate that not only are you not a fan, but you don't even watch the entire show. If you base your opinions only on the beginning rounds, you don't even begin to see the true musical talent that comes out in the later weeks. And it's really interesting to see these young folks develop as singers and performers from week to week. As to the selection of material, I think the show does it exactly right in having them sing recognizable songs instead of something they've written. I for one don't want to listen to an hour's worth of unknown songs, no matter how well written. And some of the singers will be songwriters while some of them aren't, which would put them on uneven footing. And if you've looked at all into the careers of any of the Idols after the show, they are indeed doing original material on their albums, many of them written or co-written by the Idols themselves. As I keep saying, there's a lot of talent there, if one has the patience to wait for it.

If you are neither a writer nor a professional singer, that's not surprising. <Are you true to your art?? its kareoke and they use us young. If its about singing why is there an age limit? singing should have no sex, age, or race discrimintation. the show can not be respected because of kareoke delivery and age discrimination> I wish they didn't have the strict age limit too, but that's a separate issue. And actually, if the judges find one of the performers too "karaoke," they will slam them for it. It's quite a common put-down on the show, especially from Simon. If you haven't watched the later rounds, you wouldn't know that. They don't want someone doing rote versions of the songs, they want someone putting their own stamp on it.

Can you think of any thing funnier on the tele than some of those hopefuls who really believe that they have talent but the rest of the world sees that they look like buffoons and music retards. They move like clumsy emus and they have off key piercing voices bad enough to get stay dogs howling. Just great times to be had by all. Me and my boyfriend can not get enough of seeing the expressions of Simon and Randals faces. That Arabian chick who was popular 20 years ago is not as hard on the bad acts so she is not fun to watch but she is cool and sexy and when I get to her age I hope to be just as pretty. ~~~~you don't even watch the entire show. If you base your opinions only on the beginning rounds, you don't even begin to see the true musical talent that comes out in the later weeks~~~~ dont all entries have to start in the beginning rounds? They dont get byes do they? so I am seeing some of the top 20. It is Sunday so Im off to church because the Lord comes first so I will talk with you later if you like it.

Originally Posted By danyoung >...seeing the expressions of Simon and Randals faces. And I'm not sure of Paula Abdul's real heritage, but I don't think she's Arabian. But to say that you're a fan of AI because you watch the early rounds is like saying you watch the monologue of the Tonight Show so you know all about the interviews and musical performers on the show. Believe me - it's a completely different show in the later episodes. And yes, you'll see some of the ultimate finalists during the early rounds, but not by any means all of them. There are some that you won't meet till they announce the final 24. That's when the real musical talent begins.

I may start drinking heavily before I read this

A great performer can take a song to a new level. But by Buffalo's standards people like Itzak Perlman and Yoyo Ma aren't very good because they don't write much of what they perform. But Bob Dylan is awesome because he does. My guess is Buffalo isn't a musician of any kind.

I have to base them on artistical lyrics and the sounds and instruments. I like songs that make me think and sound so good i want to get up and dance or hop around or cry HEART OF GOLD, Neil Yung LETS GET PHYSICAL, Olivia Nuton John HEY MICKEY, Toni Basil STARIWAY TO HEAVEN, Led Zepplin ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK, Muryhead ENTER SANDMAN, Metalica FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES, Garth Brooks I CANT GO FOR THAT NO CAN DO, Hall& Oats but number 2 is NOOKIE, limp Bizkit or HEY MICKEY. HEY MICKEY WINS just barely. and #1 best song ever made is SEASONS IN THE SUN by Terry Jack
