But there's also liability: worst case scenario is perhaps an unknown structural failure causing it to fall suddenly. Several people could be killed in such an event, and that could be expensive.

Years back the carousel of progress was in such disrepair that it was embarrassing to sit in there. torn chairs, non working animatronics, etc. They finally got it one upped, but it took them years to do it. IF they take it down (hope they do) how could they utilize it? Sell it in a raffle or something? Plus, they need something to draw people to the back of the lot a la the castle and SE, etc...if the hat goes, something else will take it's place.

It was basically the castle of MGM. If they get rid of the hat, then we could see it again.
