As long as you're not downing whole raw chickens you're fine. It's young kids (babies especially) and seniors you gotta be vigilant about.

I'm just of a similar standpoint as SuperDry, that it's difficult to determine and often people tend to say we got food poisoning from XYZ when they really don't have a good basis for believing so except that it was the last thing they all ate. However, obviously you determined a probable source very scientifically. And thanks to your graphic description, I'm starting to feel a little sickness of my own creeping in. *urp*

Also, the health department won't close down a restaurant for food out of temperature, the food would just be discarded. If the restaurant closed down it was by choice, not because of out of temp food. There are really 3 major reasons one would be shut down and that is not one of them.

During the meal I had an odd feeling that something just wasn't right about it. It wasn't anything specific to raise a complaint about, just a feeling..... At 2 o'clock Monday morning I began to get sick. I spent Monday - Thursday in the bed at the Polynesian while my friends were out enjoying the parks. A less than magical memory. I don't care what they say; I know that steak at Artists' Point made me sick. It happened again last month, although not at a Disney restaurant. I was at a local fine-dining establishment. Great place. I had that odd feeling again.....that something wasn't right about the grilled chicken on my salad. Four hours later I became very sick and had to drive 125 miles home feeling miserable. The next time I get an intuition that something is not right about the food in a restaurant I'm going to listen to it. I'm going to stop and order something else or go somwhere else....

There are so many variables involved with reactions/illnesses/infections. People with different immunities, different allergies, eating different foods, spices, sauces, at all times of the day. That can happen anywhere, home, restaurants, other peoples homes, stores, markets, amusement parks, etc. etc.etc. Unless there is medical testing, in addition to illness reports, all in a timely manner, it's very hard to find the culprit. You just have to be as careful as you can, the best way to recognize bad food, is your eyes and nose. Don't take a chance, there's always other options. This stuff is going to happen no matter what when humans are involved in food prep or even when they aren't, these bacterias are naturally occurring. That's what the acid in your stomach is for Be careful and be vigilant! Good luck

She just barely made it to the restroom and it was an interesting drive home to say the least. I just figured it was that meal that was "bad" - since I had fixed all of her food the previous 3 or 4 days and we ate the same things and no one else at home got ill. She was really, really sick for a couple of days and we haven't been back there since. The thought of going back there turns her gills green to this day. Can bad food make you sick immediately?

It would take a doctor, which I am not, and detailed report of food she injested to properly diagnose your daughter. I have a friend who for more than 10 years, won't eat turkeyburgers because ONE time she threw up while eating one and the last thing you ate is not usually the thing that makes you sick.

Originally Posted By ecdc This has been a fascinating topic. I'll plead guilty now to believing myths about food poisoning that some have debunked here. However, according to the Wikipedia article on food borne illnesses, there are two types of food poisoning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F..._illness The first is caused by a bacteria or virus and can take several hours or days before symptoms appear. The second is caused by toxins, and symptoms can appear within 1-6 hours of consumption. The second cause, although less common, certainly sounds like my own experience with food poisoning where I was certain a restaurant caused the issue. My family and I went out for my brother's birthday to Famous Dave's barbecue. My three brothers, my grandmother, my mother, and my wife and children were all there. Between us, we're talking about 5 different households - one of my brothers lived with my mom, my grandmother lived alone, my two other brothers lived in different apartments with roommates, and then my wife and children and I. This was the first meal any of us shared for several weeks. We ate and outside in the parking lot of the restaurant, my 4 year old son threw up. This was within 45 minutes of eating. By the time we got home, I was starting to feel ill, and this developed into one of the most miserable nights of my life. I later learned that my three brothers, in three different households, were all violently ill, vomiting every few minutes. My youngest son, mother, wife, and grandma were fine. We realized the one thing that me, my oldest son, and my three brothers had in common is that we'd eaten the pork. Again, this is the only meal any of us had eaten together for some time. That leaves three possibilities that I can think of that caused the illness: 1) The food we ate at the restaurant, probably the pork but perhaps something else unique to those of us who became ill; 2) We all coincidentally ate something separately over the last few days that made us extremely ill within minutes of one another; 3) We all contracted the flu and showed symptoms within an hour of each other. (Note that like mele's story, we got ill in order of size, me getting sick last, but still within an hour of everyone else.) I'm easily one of the most skeptical people on these boards I genuinely appreciate the information provided here that's helped clear up some of the myths that I believed without good reason. But I'm hard-pressed to come up with an alternative explanation that's as plausible as the explanation that Famous Dave's meat made my family sick, affecting four different households within an hour of each other, and within two hours of eating. Other members of these households that were sharing other meals and food did not become sick. So while the OP probably was jumping to a conclusion by blaming the salads at the French Market, it is a possible explanation.
