    It went away for Christmas '73 due to the Arab Oil Embargo that winter and the start of the energy crisis. And it never returned, likely due to changing tastes more than energy efficiency.

    When it was built, the Matterhorn was the tallest building in Orange County. Of course, with the addition of the towers to the Disneyland Hotel, the nearby area got some tall buildings (and the landscaping surrounding the park has grown considerably), but I understand that it was truly a sight to behold. It wasn't too long ago that it was easy to see from a distance on I-5; now you pretty much need to know it's there to see it in the sprawl
