Ummmm.. excuse me, but although the first open heart surgery was done by a German doctor in the late 1800's to repair a stab wound; heart surgery as it is known today was pioneered by Dr. Lillehei at the University of Minnesota. I should know. My brother had open heart surgery performed by Dr. Lillehei.

I am not taking anything away from American medicine per say, I am trying to demonstrate that not every medical breakthrough takes place in the states.

It often makes me laugh - NASA spent millions to develop a ball point pen that could write in space. Russia used a pencil. Sometime expensive is not always the best. But at the same time I recognise that US medicine is cool too. Reality is, true frontier research is based on international collaborative methods. The business approach of medicine in the US helps technical and pharmocological growth. Some of the resource constraints of socialised countries gets innovators to think outside of the box. The end result - we all in theory win.

Though in Europe we don't necessarily need insurance to win ;-p

Oh, one other thing I prefer about the american system though, over the counter treatments are easier to get. 2007 is the first year you can buy flu jabs in the UK. Before that you had to be disabled, work in an essential, vulnerable field, or be over 65 - but then it was free.

Now we can pay $30 and have the jab done at the pharmacist.

Here here - or how about the dumbing down of Disney parks all together?

Okay, now right there we see why the UK system is superior to the American system.

Only in violent America would we call the thing a "shot" -- who wants to get a shot??

Meanwhile a "jab" sounds like jolly good fun!
