Your problem is that the stereotypes DO accurately portray the overwhelming majority of the gun enthusiasts out there. A gun enthusiast is enthusiastic about a device with the primary purpose of killing things. That's not a stereotype. It's the definition. And much can be assumed from it.

For self defense? I've never felt the need. Plus there are too many incidents of accidents in the home. My father-in-law fought in WW2. As a civilian he never owned a firearm and had no desire to own one, because in his own words, he had seen first hand what they were designed for.
