I am very fortunate to have never been the victim of a major crime. We've had a couple of instances of very minor vandalism of outdoor holiday lights and decorations, and that is it.

I've been lucky in the natural disaster department as well. We've had to have our roof replaced twice due to hailstorms and some water damage from frozen pipes bursting a couple of times.

The worst crime I've been a victim of was when I was 8 and my family was travelling in Europe. We were staying on a sleeper train - 5 of us and one French man we didn't know. Overnight someone came into our room while we were sleeping and stole all our money, credit cards, jewellery, basically everything we had. They threw our passports on the ground outside the door, which was the only lucky part of the whole situation. We were pretty sure they used some form of chloroform because my mother wakes up at the slightest thing and she had a pouch with jewellery on the far side of her in her bed, and it was taken - there's no way she would have slept through someone reaching over her like that. Funnily enough, despite about $10 000 of cash and personal possessions being stolen, the worst part was they took our camera with the film still in it. We'd just been in Austria and had woken on Christmas morning to beautiful snow - the first time we'd ever seen it, and of course, that film was in the camera.

Similar to JB's story, my sister (Chelley Belle) who was 15 at the time and learning Italian at school put the police report in in fluent Italian. She was already the star of Italian at her school, but that just gave her a bit more credit in her teacher's eyes.

We ended up cutting our holiday short and going straight home because it was too difficult to get around with limited funds and ID, and besides, the mood was kind of ruined. I was heartbroken because we hadn't yet got to Venice, which was my number one excitement of the trip. I still haven't ever got there.

Funny thing about that jacket. It only came into my life because of a policy at Sears. My mother had ordered an ugly thinner jacket for me at one time. Sears ran out of those jackets and as part of its policy at the time, replaced it with something better. The replacement was much more beautiful than what my mom had ordered, and thicker too. I loved that jacket and it turned out to maybe have saved my life one cold, February day.

This is why I'm no longer married, folks.
