I would say people that belong to a gun club would have a gun but not your average person you meet in the street.

Most farmers on a property in the country would have guns to protect their lifestock.

My brother in law is the only person I know with a gun and that's because he's a policeman but he does not bring his gun home from work it's secured in a safe at the police station.

So it was very interesting to us when we stayed with some friends in LA on our last trip and they had a gun in the house and showed it to us.

It made me very uneasy as we are just not used to individuals having their own gun!

Accidents with guns are less likely to happen if people don't have them in the first place, we really don't need them in the home and I hope we in Australia continue to do without them as a general protection source!

To answer the question, since it is a constitutional right to bear arms, I have no problems with responsible ownership.

But only if you have proper training, and are pre-screened.

<< If you feel 'unsafe' in your home? Tough. There are other measures of protection. If we all held the same ideal, there would not be nearly as many guns floating around out there, registered or not. >>

Like maybe moving to a smaller city, or heaven forbid a small village. (Although I will be moving back into the city when I can afford it).

<<I am Canadian, and therefore do not have the same emotional ties to constitutional rights. I believe that the constitution was written a very long time ago, and it's time to let some of the old crap go. >>

Our constitution was ammended in 1982, I was alive, I was out of diapers. It wasn't that Long ago :p

<<We have seen too many guns creep up here (from many places, not just the US) and yes, I am angry about it. We are losing too many young people needlessly, just by virtue of the fact that they were in a the wrong place at the wrong time where someone else was using a gun recklessly. >>

The city by me has had more then one murder this year :(.

<<If the adage is that 'guns don't kill people, people kill people', then I contend that people without guns are obviously less likely to have that opportunity.>>

But I also don't agree with any hidden weapens or large daggers or bombs or anything. Period.

    <<Sorry, it's kind of personal. >>

Especially if the life you are taking is someone I know. You don't have the right to take or take away from the Quality of Anyones life. Ok but I am for bringing back capital punishment esp, for rapists, murderers and Liberal politicians :p (The last one was a joke, this is a depressing subject).

Quite honestly, even if the person breaking into my house to hurt my family is "someone you know", in America, we DO have the right to defend ourselves and our families. I'm not too worried about the taking away from "quality of anyone's life" if that person is trying to ruin *my* quality of life.

The fact of the matter is that, there is a good chance that the reason this country has never seriously been attacked is because the image in the rest of the world is that we already all have guns and are willing to use them in our own defense. Agreeing that the possession of guns certainly has a downside, the upside of world image is probably one of the reasons we have stayed free from attack. 9/11 excluded.

PS...I personally have never owned one and have no plans too.

Please know I'm not disagreeing with you mele! Your post did remind me of that stupid trial in Colorado a few years ago though. Two male neighbors got into a confrontation on one of their porches. The man (who was a rotten neighbor!) told the other one to get off his porch. When the man stood his ground, the rotten neighbor got his shotgun and killed his neighbor! He was found innocent because he was "protecting" his property! That disgusts me.

Te 2nd ammendment is my right, it is your right, and no one should be infavor of giving up any right that our constitution grants.

It only takes ONE TIME to be in a situation of needing it and not having it to change your mind but at that point its too late.

"If I don't feel safe in my own home...too bad?" LOL ROFL Puuuuulease. It's that very mentality that makes me feel unsafe in general. You may as well be saying this:

" If your opinion differs from mine, even if its only about someting you do behind closed doors and in your own home, then you should be forced to bend to MY will. And if you don't like it, then too bad. "

It's really a playground argument, with throwing stones.

My reply to the above quote is this. It's only the Constitution of the United States. If you don't like it, too bad.

I don't think you should have the right to kill someone just because they are on your property...there has to be some major threat. Of course, this is hard to prove. One of the many reasons why we don't have guns in our home.

I could say a lot about the violence I grew up with and how I could have reacted if I had been more comfortable with guns but I don't know if I would have ever used them or not. I think later, when I was older and suffered from depression, it's possible I would have used them on myself. In MY mind (and in my life), available guns are just that...available to hurt someone.

If people MUST have guns in this co7untry, I think they should be limited to one per person. I look at people who have multiple guns as being, well, kind of crazy. And the men who own multiples? Well, let's just say I think they have an inferiority complex.

What civilian needs an AR-15 or other semi automatic unless you're a subsistance approved hunter living in Alaska?? I am against the NRA and their push of the right of every American to own a weapon. Stats might say what you want them to, but just because you are allowed the right to own a weapon doesn't mean you should be, (I feel the same way about humans breeding though.. *shrug*)

If you want protection, I say learn tai chi or TKD. It might not keep you from getting robbed but at least you can defend yourself.

As I said, I don't personally own a gun and never will but I sure don't want to live anyplace where it is illegal to own one. Yes, bad guys use guns in bad ways but like everything else in life the bad guys will get them anyway because they don't care about laws. I would rather not let them know that I don't have one. That makes me an easy target. I don't want that doubt removed. If someone wants to kill you they will do it with or without guns, but they might just hesitate if they think you have one.

I think that private gun ownership is in general a good thing, but I do think that there should be stricter controls on the sale of guns, particularly in gray markets like gun shows. Guns should have ownership records just like cars do. Every exchange of gun ownership should be recorded.

There is a difference between the militia and the National Guard, and I think that there are a ton of reasons that the states should assert more authority over their own militia than they currently do.
