It was getting to be in a really bad state according to posters (I don't know because at the time I was saving to go to WDW for my Honeymoon - in fact I we there 10 years ago this month, and had a fantastic time too). There were people asking folks not to be so negative (and on line communities were much smaller then, and many of the sites we have now did not exist then, some were splinter groups from LP as they did not see eye to eye). There were others deeply concerned about the direction of travel and wrote about it. And then there were issues with real evidence including the death on Big Thunder and the death on the quay side. And some people just disappeared on line. But then Paul Pressler and Cynthia Harris left, and budget was given to DL for the 50th, and they really restored the place. It still is not as good as the first 4 decades, but it is still very worth while and much better than the dark days. And I really hope the same could happen for WDW (minus the fatalities). Writing happy clappy posts will not achieve that, nor would personal jibes, and evidence based statements are key. But this year I think speaks volumes. Serveal colleagues have gone to Orlando for 2 - 4 week visits. When they come home, they rave about Universal, Busch Gardens, Sea World and KSC. every single one I had to ask about their Disney experiences (and I make sure not to assert any of my opinions, for despite what some posters may think, I like to gain an unbiased perspective - part of it is for checking if I am the one who has changed). For the repeat visitors, they all told me it is not as good as it used to be, things are broken, shops/restaurants closed, poor food options for counter service, nothing interesting in the shops, where has the entertainment gone, how busy DHS was the few nights Fantasmic was on etc. For the new visitors, they have said things like "It's for kids", or Busch Gardens is better than DAK. The only positives were about Epcot, and even then, the main feature was a complaint about queue lengths for Soarin' Then the most interesting ones are two DVC owners I know, both former LPers, one in the US and one in the UK. The one in the US messaged me from his DVC resort to say I was right, and he is horrified with the state of his unit, and the other units he moved to, and the parks. He has written to Disney and received a simple thank you we take feedback on board etc. letter. I then said why didn't he write about his experiences on line? He said he did not want to be lynched by both the pixie dusters like Spirit and I are, nor the DVC bashers. And he said he felt bad about buying into DVC now after over a decade of ownership. Pretty poignant. The Brit DVCer is spending the next few weeks there. they are going on a non Disney Cruise first because they feel it offers better value, then they are off to WDW and USO. They are excited about their trip, but have mostly talked about the cruise (they are frequent cruisers) and USO. What is really telling is they have opted to spend New Years Eve at City Walk. Their reason, Disney no longer caters to adults like they used to. Here are some evidential points as to why there may be so many negative posts. As others have said, try writing up some of the positive ones. If it is something really neat, most posters on LP (including those of us that are considered doom and gloomers) will probably respond with positive comments too.

No one dislikes you for being positive. In fact, I'm quite sure that you are liked for it, despite disagreements.

It seems, in my mind at least, that for every thing that has declined (i.e. more eating places closed, longer lines, less variety at the shops) there are way more things to do. WDW has 4 parks. I'm not going to take the time to add up how many attractions that translates into, but if you compare it to the early 80's (before EPCOT) it is mind boggling. Just look at the virtual millions presently being spent in MK alone. What exactly does everyone want. Disney parks are no longer, so called, elite parks. People from every walk of life and social culture now come through the gates. Want to know why the streets aren't as clean as they once were...here's a little secret, it is because smoking is no longer allowed other than in designated areas. In the past there was a veritable army of people hiding out of sight waiting for someone to drop a butt. They came out of no place and swept it up. Along with cigs. they picked up trash, etc. Now there is no immediate need for those cleaners to be everywhere. Hence, stuff doesn't get picked up as quickly. The air is cleaner though and little kids aren't in danger of being burnt as easily. If a light bulb had ever been out, I never noticed it. I was to busy looking at other more exciting and interesting stuff. Part of the complaining comes from over exposure to the parks as well. The more one goes the less new there is to see. The more bored one gets the more they look for other things. Things wrong that might have been wrong in the early days of their visits but went unnoticed because there was so much else to concentrate on. Human nature. I do agree that, Once Upon A Time, the boards were a place that you went to share your joy and wonderment of a place like Disney, now it's for disappointment and critique. If not that it is a population of entitled trying to find out what they can do to circumvent the rules and "get away with something". Or bitch about the disabled holding them up and ruining their vacation. I personally would love to once again feel the overwhelming sense of awe that I felt on my very first trip to WDW. But as with anything else, I can never feel the first time emotion after the first time. After that it is more subdued and, ok, sometimes critical. That said, I still go as often as I can, I sometimes notice a bulb out now but I know that it is a piece of equipment that might have been working mere seconds before I looked at it. I don't know since I wasn't watching it constantly. And even if I do notice it, it will take a lot more than that to distract me from the joy of inner child release the place offers me. There is only one way to return to the early and original intent of these boards. Continue posting positive things. Ignore those who seem to be only able to see the bad side of everything and won't rest until they have made everyone as anger and unhappy as they are. In other words...keep on keeping on. We need the positives, don't take them away. It will kill this site.

Still very possible to have a awesome time, and have that "Disney" feeling while noticing that some things have slipped.

Unless some of the people wake up and realize that the place isn't perfect, nothing is gonna change. I always have fun at the place. Most of the time it has nothing to do with the place though, and has everything to do with the people I go with. That wasn't the case in the late 90s/early 00s where I was awed by WDW. I want that back. Most people do talk about the good things as well. Hell, even Spirit did on his last trip report. unfortunately the goods are the same things every time, and the bad things tend to multiply.
