Backstage exiting allows guests coming in for the second fireworks display to flow into the park up MainStreet or Epcot Mainbridge while the guests who are leaving exit out the sides. Less in/out clash. It works..... I've been backstage at MK many times, and the only time I've noticed objectionable smells is if I'm standing right next to a dumpster.

I've also used it in reverse as a quick route to space mtn , after fireworks and before the 2nd spectomagic parade. This way I didn't have to navigate against a sea of exiting people.
