As for boring ... maybe. But the neighborhoods are much nicer over the ghettos that the 5 goes through. Commerce and the rest of the old ugly industrial buildings are not exactly "becoming". ;)

the last trip my dh was driving so he took the alternate route "Heidi" had suggested, I am terrible with directions but it took us over through hollywood and then on to 101 and then back to the 5. it was almost deserted and much more to look at. I dont know if it was quicker but much less stress. no stop and go traffic. it worked so well we took it on the way home also : )

sorry dont quite remember the first freeway but maybe someone else knows the route I am talking about....not from CA and only go to DL.

I thought getting off the 5 would be crazy but it worked better for us : )

Those are the San Gabriels. The San Bernardinos start at Cajon Pass and go east.

DH ALWAYS goes 5, it's like he is on auto pilot. Being the uber planner that I am I HAVE to have alternate plans. He laughs at me but then again is impressed when "voila" I just happen to have the answer to a "problem" :) I have to admit that 5 freaks me out a bit past Burbank.

I've enjoyed and appreciated reading all the posts!
