I thought she was just okay. Stefano - I thought he rebounded well this week. Strong performance. Scotty - first performance I did not like. I agree with mentors, I think it would have been more interesting to hear "Everybody's Talking." Haley - another nails on the chalkboard performance for me. Casey - LOVED it!!! I want him to be in some club in New Orleans next time I go, I could sit and listen to him all night. Jacob - I think it was his best ever but he's not my cup of tea. James - I'm not a metalhead so while I can appreciate his vocals, the song was ok for me. Just not my thing. Bottom Three for Me: Paul, Haley and Lauren I hope Paul or Haley go home, either one of them is like sticking pencils in my eyeballs.

I just do Casey was good but I don't care for Jazz (I know I'm not making friends on this thread) unless I am in NOS in Disneyland. Didn't know James song. I understand the guy with the guitar is a legend but shouldn't he have scooted over a bit when James was being judged? James is GOOD! Haley, she did OK but was the weakest of the night. Enjoyed Jacob and liked that he didn't murder the song like some do by trying to "make it their own." Lauren did very well. HATE the song because it is overplayed on the ONE radio station we can receive at the office. MUCH prefer Lauren's voice to Mileys. Stefano, best he's done but he just doesn't have the stage presence others do. Likely to be in the bottom three, Haley, Casey, Jacob judging from who is said to be voting.

'Old Time Rock n Roll' is a dull song, and that didn't help either. I didn't care for it but it was vintage Paul - if that's what you like, there ya go. He's on the dime tonight. Scotty - I never heard that song before, but it doesn't matter since I don't care for country music anyway. I agree with Jimmy that 'Everybody's Talkin' would have been a better choice - for me personally - but Scotty's going to stick with his comfort zone. Tonight he's safe as in his mother's arms. Casey - also chose to ignore Jimmy and sing 'Nature Boy'. Weird song to begin with, and he mucked it up even more with his version. I'm getting annoyed with the judges gushing and being over-effusive about mediocre performances - at best. Casey was the most prominent example of that last night. James - Another one who chose to completely ignore the mentors and do whatever the hell he wanted. I've got no gripe with heavy metal, I just think that song was a bit of a stiff, and had a long instrumental break where he doesn't sing at all. While it's not a good "singer showcase" song, he did a fine job singing and now I never need to hear that song again. Stefano - I love 'End of the Road' - not because of whatever Boys 2 Men did with it, but because of what Gladys Knight did with it. So I'm giving Stefano a pass this week because he took a terrific song and did it justice. Yes, he still hammed it up way too much, but he always does. Jacob - I've had my knives out for this guy from the very beginning, and I still do. I suppose 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' is a good song for him, and he gave it a more gospel feel than the song normally has, but I'm just not that into him. He was bottom 3 last week, so just maybe this will be his week to vamoose. Hope so. The Girls --------- Haley - I agree with Randy, 'Call Me' didn't really give her an opportunity to show off her strengths. It's a so-so pop song from thirty years ago that I never really liked, and a tag line that's as much barking as singing. She's in jeopardy tonight. Lauren - she aimed low with a Miley Cyrus song I didn't know, and did a passable job with it. At least it was more age-appropriate for a sixteen year old virgin than 'Natural Woman' last week. She's in trouble tonight too, if only because she doesn't have a Y chromosone and it's open season on Idol chicks this year. Still, she's been doing well enough that I don't think she'll make the bottom three. Yet. Bottom Three - Casey, Jacob, and - sorry Labuda - Paul. I hope it's Jacob. I always hope it's Jacob.

I really am clueless as to who is getting sent home tonight.

As for his comments about presenting his songs "as if" they were an encore to a larger show, he's not naturally a rocker, but he keeps trying to be. I think he'd be better off sticking to his own vein of music, much like Scotty's always going to gravitate to country - he'd stick to that genre even if people were throwing rocks at him, it's just who he is. Similarly with Paul, I might like him more if he did a soulful ballad like Clapton's 'Wonderful Tonight' or even 'Tears in Heaven' instead of galloping through pop standards.

I still love love love that classic country baritone, but he's actually started to annoy me. Could listen to him all day, but can't watch him. Picked a boring song, too. (Sooooo many better country songs from this decade to choose from!) The judges finally criticized him, but you watch. He won't even be in the bottom three. And if the triple-whammy of going first, turning in a weak performance AND having the judges slam him (relatively speaking - not one of them has slammed anyone all season like Simon would have done before the first Coke product placement) can't derail him, nothing will. If he's not in the bottom 3 this week, bank on it: he's winning. James: Love the song choice (and the song) and damn if he didn't pull it off. (Except partially those painfully high notes at the end - he hit about 2/3 of them.) The drummers were a gimmick that actually worked, too. Haley: Eh. Not bad, but it took me forever just to remember what she sang last night, which tells you something. Jacob: Liked it. Though obviously Luther is a major influence on him, it still takes guts to take on an iconic song from a voice like that (as it does to take on Aretha or Mariah or Stevie Wonder - unless it's Stevie Wonder week and you HAVE to...) so props to him for pulling it off. The judges were a little weird; Jennifer was basically saying the audience could feel the emotion and yet you controlled the emotion so you could actually sing it... which I thought would be followed by "so good job!," but wasn't. And then Randy said he needed to stop holding back... after weeks of telling him to rein it in a little. Casey: Really pretty good. I wasn't familiar with this song, and he made me want to listen to it, so that says something. The best he's been in a while. Stefano: Arguably his best performance, but I still think he goes home tonight. He's a perennial bottom-3 dweller, and it's all about the fan base, which he doesn't seem to have created. Lauren: This time, their advice to stop holding back made sense. This girl has the chops, but DOES hold back on stage too much. You can see it, and it hinders her. There's a place for her in Nashville, though, for sure. Carrie Underwood, if you recall, had the voice but her performance skills were such that she was actually called "fembot" by many Idol fans. She learned performance skills, though, and so can Lauren. I think she and James are probably the only ones capable of dethroning Scotty this season, IF Scotty keeps choosing songs unwisely, and if his mugging starts to annoy people like it has me. I just don't see the others with a big enough fan base, as evidenced by previous showings in the bottom 3. My basic take on this season is this: while the judges did a good job of not picking any obvious clunker contestants (no Sanjayas, as even the first few to go had obvious singing talent), and the overall level is probably higher than usual, they also didn't pick anyone extraordinary, IMO. The past two seasons, I thought Adam and Crystal (though each came in second to a somewhat blander contestant) really were extraordinary talents. Not seeing that this year. Not that 2 or 3 won't be successful; but they lack a certain, well, X-factor, if you will. I think Stefano goes home tonight.
