I'll be the first to admit that I don't follow much contemporary music anymore, so 'songs of the 21st century' wasn't a great theme for me. Nevertheless, they did manage to pick a few songs that I know.

Scotty - He found one, because "Swingin'" is a 20th century song, although no one wants to admit it. 1988 - John Anderson won awards after he wrote and recorded it. Lucky for Scotty, LeeAnn Rimes apparently re-released it within the last ten years. Which is still odd, considering what the song is "about". Is it just me, or does this song conjure up male sex organs? Maybe not a great song for LeeAnn, but I thought it was a great song choice for Scotty. The judges didn't, and criticized him for it - not for 'cheating' the 21st century theme, but for taking the safe choice instead of something more daring. I liked it more than any other Scotty performance so far - which isn't saying much - but it's because I've always enjoyed the song, despite it's country twang, BECAUSE of the vague sexual innuendo. So nice job Scotty, even if the judges didn't like it.

Haley - came out with some song on the charts right now - that I've never heard - by somebody called Adele. It was alright, not much more. And I'm something of a Haley supporter. Weird dress again tonight, red with white polka-dots, and tight, with lots of pointy angles. It fit nicely, but the polka dots seemed to juvenile, while the figure hugging seemed va-va-voom. Like I said, weird dress.

James - something by something called Muse. Didn't know the song, seemed like an Adam Lambert reject. Judges loved it, me not so much.

Jacob - Tried to channel Luther Vandross in a tribute to his dad who died when he was twelve. Not that much of a stretch - both are heavy black men who are somewhat closeted. But Luther could hit and sustain all the notes, while Jacob misses almost as often as he hits it. And he cried - again - this time during the previously taped bit. Hated the whole thing. I'm so done with Jacob.

Casey - tonight was better than he's been in a month, largely because he ditched a lot of the gimmicks and just did a straight-up performance. But Casey's only got so-so singing chops, and this revealed it. And then for a finale he stalked up to the judges table, and gave J-Lo a grandma peck on the cheek, and the place erupted. Another gimmick. I'm cynical enough that I don't believe anything on this show is spontaneous, but he managed to get a lotta mileage out of it, so oh well. People love Casey and laud his enormous talent - I don't see it.

Lauren - another one that I think is overrated. I didn't know the song she sang, but it was typical Lauren, whatever it was. The judges continue to expect great things from her, though I don't know why. Still, she seems to have lots of voters and supporters, so she's probably secure for several more weeks.

Stefano - took the closer spot with NeYo's "Closer" - how appropo. At least I knew this song. Stefano's getting cockier without getting any better. You'd think being in the bottom three every week would be humbling, but I guess not. He's always going to be overly dramatic, and he botched a couple of notes along the way, but it just doesn't much matter, he's toast walking.

Too much filler material last night. They should have saved the loser medley for Wednesday's show, and dropped Paul out of it altogether. And I never want to see that damned painted suit again.

Yeah, I think Stefano is going home tonight.

I really like Casey... I think he is a great musician but admittedly not the best singer. And as Simon never let us forget... American Idol is a SINGING contest.

I really disliked the song James performed... it just is NOT a style of music I like. But everyone else raved about it, so I guess it must have been good.

Lauren is cute and I think could be considerably better than she is. Who knows though if she can kick it up a notch before she's eliminated?

I actually thought Stefano's performance was the best he's done yet. Just when I had really started to work up a major dislike for him!

Bottom three: Stefano, Haley and Jacob. My pick to go: Jacob. The one who will probably go: Stefano

I really liked Haley last night (loved the dress) but Alaina/Alana, who? What am I missing?

Love Jacob's voice but wish they didn't use so many close ups. Waiting for the camera to give him a tonsilectomy.

Favorites last night. Casey, James and Haley.

AMEN to that! I dig Paul, but he's got a niche he fits in, and he needs to stay in that niche instead of stretching the way Idol force him to try. And I want to burn that suit - both the white AND black versions.

As far as teh performances, I think Dabob pretty much sums up my feelings in his post about this week's performances.

I won't miss Stefano at all and expect to be surprised he was a finalist when I see him in the finale. Kind of like I was to see that curly-haired lady who'd I'd forgotten prior to the Wednesday night "let's trot out our losers now" song.

I expect the next two to go will likely be Jacob and Haley, then Casey leaving us with either Scotty, Lauren, or James as this year's idol. Of those three, I'd like to see James since it's already quite obvious that Lauren and Scotty will have big careers if they want them. James not so much, so he needs the win more.

Oh, and did anyone else think David Cook looked REALLY weird last night? HIs face was too dang smooth IMO.. and his song wasn't all that good. I also didn't dig Katie's too much, but at least now I know when I can take a bathroom break when I see her in concert here in a couple of months. :D

Back to Wednesdays show. I hated the group song with the "losers." Who ever came up with that idea should be fired. It appeared that each contestant was told they could do what ever they wanted as long as they knew the lyrics. For the first time I saw why people dislike Paul.

We saw Elton John in Springfield last weekend and he made a Flower Suit work. Paul, not so much!

I thought the duets were the most telling. We had Scotty with Lauren and she just sounded so much better than he did. Jacob was paired with James and I thought James just really out sang him. The duet with Casey and Haley was good and while I thought Casey was slightly better, it wasn't as one sided as the other duets were to me.

My top 3 were James, Lauren, & Casey with Scotty, Haley, & Jacob being the bottom 3.

I wish it was Scotty going home, but I'm afriad those teen girls will keep him going for a long time. Therefore, I think Jacob is in the most trouble.

Heck, as I mentioned on FB last night, I shockingly thought Haley's performance was good.

I found the duets a waste of time, though I did think the one that Casey & Haley did was good.

Jacob - never liked him, never will. Still he was better than average last night with a song I didn't know. He was dressed like a kalidiscope with every bright color, pattern, check and stripe under the sun - and a bow tie. A walking fashion don't. He's at risk tonight and we can only hope . . .

Lauren - While not exactly one of my favorites, I've always conceded that she appears to be a front runner. She was just alright last night, also singing a song I didn't know. It was fun having Miley Cyrus pop in after Jimmy's comment a few weeks back about how Lauren should "crush her". I don't hate Miley the way many do, perhaps because of my fondness for "Bolt". Oddly, on her duet with Scotty, I thought she was better than in her solo piece. Not hard to do considering just how off the harmonies Scotty was, but she didn't let his sub-par singing throw her off her melody. She's probably safe - for now.

James - I really liked it. 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' is really a chick song - at least in the lyrics, but he skipped all of his usual hysterics and just did a nice slow roll on it, while still hitting some of his money notes along the way. Nicely done. He's Fort Knox safe tonight.

Scotty - better than usual with 'You've Got A Friend'. This song has been exhausted with over-exposure for what - almost forty years now? It could have been awful, but he did what we knew he'd do - turn it into a country song. He somehow managed to infuse it with enough twang to make it seem different enough from what we all know too well. He's also secure.

Haley - odd song. The chorus part of it "works" well for her, and Haley rolled through it three separate times in less than two minutes. But the two verses seem almost like a completely different song, and that part didn't work so well. Still, she brings gallons of charm and smiles to her performances and that helps her a lot, at least with me. She may go down tonight, but I'm hoping she squeaks through to the Top Five.

Casey - I agree with Randy, the song seems almost written for him and his odd-duck style. It certainly gave him a showcase for his peculiar way with a performance. Casey developed a rep for being "fun" early on in the competition. This seemed like a return to form for him. Still, he might be at risk tonight.

The duets were mostly time wasters. As mentioned, Scotty and Lauren's was a mixed bag - she was actually pretty good, he sucked. Haley and Casey murdered "I Feel The Earth Move", and surprisingly James and Jacob kind of worked it out on "Somethin' Good", with both of them going up into the rafters vocally and playing off each other.

The judges seem to be overreacting with the positive feedback - especially Steven. I'm sensing that he doesn't really want to be there, and just blows pre-scripted kisses at the contestants. He told Haley that he "heard God" in her singing of the Gilmore Girls TV show theme. C'mon.

Bottom two - Jacob (always Jacob) and probably Casey. Haley's also a dark-horse candidate for elimination.

Who in the heck dressed Jacob?
