Unless they have some sort of developmental disability. I don't know for sure if that was the case last night or not, but from what I could tell, it sure seems likely. It's one thing if someone goes into it with the knowledge they may not make the cut, or that they might be subjected to a harsh critique. But it's something else entirely if it turns into them slamming people with other issues.

The screening process should be in place to protect those folks in particular from getting thrown to the wolves, not there to actively try and pull them in under somewhat false pretenses. It's just mean.

I know it seems incredible that people who have a complete lack of musical talent could actually believe they can sing, but that happens all the time. Part of being tone deaf is just that. . . you can't tell whether something is melodious, whether or not you're singing the correct melody, whether you're on pitch, etc. There are a whole big bunch of people out there who can't sing well at all but still believe that they can.

So to answer the original question, yes, many awful singers truly do believe they sound good. I have no doubt that some, if not most, of the really pitiful contestants on American Idol are going in there with high hopes and the absolute conviction that they will be chosen for the show. That's part of what is so sickening when the judges go for the jugular. I have no problem with them telling people they aren't singers, but the vicious personal attacks are needlessly cruel.

Yep, that's what I don't care for. Of course, my little protest can't fly in the face of millions and millions of people who tune in specifically to see people get the boot.

She then did a spot on impression of Donald Trump by swooshing her hair all over to one side.

But in all seriousness, she's right.

Last night I happened to catch Larry King who had Fantasia and Taylor Hicks on. They had a split screen of Fantasia and the clip of the show where Simon made fun of the way the guy looked. Fantasia's jaw literally dropped when she heard his comment. You could tell she was mortified.

They talked about this same issue. A LOT of people are upset about this this time around. Simon may have gone too far this time.

If the producers of Idol are not careful, they are going to scare off their core audience. If they keep sending people through simply to see how much abuse will be heaped on them, Idol will end up on MTV, sandwiched between reruns of Jackass.
