He needs to step it up a bit. He's not my favorite but he'd make a great American Idol. I want to hear him do some Marvin Gaye, Jason Timberlake, Maxwell, Donny Hathaway sort of stuff.

I think if you'd heard it before, you might have liked it better -- maybe? IMHO, what he did fit that song. I didn't get that Mariah Carey feel (where she elongates a simple word like "and" into a 30 second vocal exercise only dogs can hear) from his singing. Was it showing off? Sure. Was he working the camera? Sure. But that's what they're supposed to do -- not play it totally safe. Most of the music I listen to is soul and R&B and jazz, and to me, I could imagine his version of that song fitting into my station's playlist.
