I didn't see any million dollar candidates tonight. Some of last week's cast offs were better than anything tonight - like the ventriloquist guy and 'hoopalicious' (the chick with the hula hoops).

Two hours of my life - wasted. And once again, I'll be missing the thursday night show - I've got better things to do.

This is a bit unfair to the acts. If the judges had announced their pick last night, the audience pick would be limited to the nine remaining contestants. This way, the public has ten acts to choose from, possibly affecting the outcome.

The reason given is that hasselhoff and brandy seem to be favoring a singing act - presumeably the chines doo-wop guys, and piers (the brit) is concerned that the finale will be a series of singing acts, and too similar to american idol. He has a point.

In the first half hour they barely manage to get two performances in. A few times they didn't even manage to get a single act on between commercial breaks - they come back from the commercial, chat amongst themselves, tease about which acts "may" be coming up soon, and then go to another commercial.

And many of the acts themselves are barely watchable. The judges gave their "best of the night" to a septagenarian granny who raps - slowly and badly. I was afraid her teeth were going to pop out on national television. And she's STILL younger than regis. They didn't just pass her through to the finals, they gushed about how she could take it all.

Hasselhoff looked really bad tonight - like he might be ill. And Brandy looked even worse than him.

One of the acts - some stilt dancers - complained about having to sit in the bleachers with the audience for three hours - if full makeup and costumes - waiting to see if their act was called up. They have a valid point - stage makeup and costumes that may be cool on stage just look bizarre when they're sitting in the audience. I'm wondering about the guy with birds shoved up his sleeves, pant legs, and gawd knows where else - just sitting there hoping to get called to the stage. If it's uncomfortable for him, I can only guess what the birds must be going through.

In theory, there's a good show buried underneath all this TV cheese, but they need better acts, faster pacing, tighter production, a hipper host than regis, and a different panel of judges. In other words, just everything is wrong.

BUT, I was very happy that Bianca Ryan was put through and that Kevin whatever-his-last-name-is (the magician) came in 3rd - I have high hopes that he'll be one of the finalists, as I voted for him a couple of times the other night in addition to the 8 votes I cast for Bianca.

Very true. DH has been keeping a tally in Excel as to how the judges vote, and how we vote on each one. Piers, needless to say, is the harshet judge, having given out 9 Xs so far in the semis, but DH & I are much, much harsher judges - he's given 19 Xs so far, and I've given 18.

Looking forward to the quick-change folks on next week's show - I really enjoyed their performance last time around - amazing what they did!

From what I can gather, this show is a kind of combo of american idol and big brother, where the contestants are living together while going through the audition process.

But there's talk of just pulling the show from the air and not running the season at all. This has happened before, with "the mole" hosted by anderson cooper. It was similar to 'amazing race' where teams of contestants travel the globe and search for clues to the mystery, while one of the people among them is a "ringer" who's trying to sabotage their efforts. But the ratings were so bad that halfway through it's run they decided to pull the show off the air, and the viewers that WERE watching (like me) never got to find out how it ended or who won.

This is what happens when there's so many copycat shows all chasing after the same audience - somethin's gotta give.

The contortionist chick with the bow and arrow is good too - but same problem, that's about all she does.

And I've about had enough of brandy. She seems to like to put on airs and pretend that she's an upscale diva with oh so delicate sensibilities. But then she turns around and acts like a brat during the segments where she's collaborating with the judges. She also slips and makes low-rent grammatical errors that undermine her pretensions of high-class grandeur. Sorry doll - I'm not buying it. Get real.

I felt the same way about the contortionist and quick-change people. Very impressive, but could I watch 30 minutes of them?

By the same token, I had hopes that this wouldn't be just another singing competition. I ended up voting for the quick-change people.

This show should be so much better than it is.
