Same old same old. New signs, new wallpaper, new billionaire owners, but serving the same overpriced, lab-formulated, focus-group-tested bacon and swiss burgers. Borrrrringgg.

Sure, but you aren't the target demographic.

They are aiming at families who have some money to burn, who want something better than Denny's or McDonald's but at the same time something that is "safe" (which is why most chain eateries serve the same type of food, and use silly gimmicks to distinguish themselves (is there anything remotely genuinely Australian about Outback Steakhouses?).

Many of these tourist families will be prosperous, but will be from smaller, western metro areas that don't have a PF Chang, a Bubba Gump, a Cheesecake Factory, etc. So for them it will be something new and maybe even the gimmicks might be fun (isn't that why people eat at the Blue Bayou?).

And they will pull in some locals as well.

Yes, The Emporium was the Bay Area's version of Macy's. It was bought by Federated Stores some years ago and most of the locations became Macy's stores. The SF downtown location has been transformed into a mega-shopping mall with a giganitic Bloomingdales as the primary anchor.

What is more Southern Californian than shopping malls and chain restaurants? j/k, I would love to see the more unique dining experiances but these days that is quit rare, so I am happy setteling for the franchise places that only have a few locations and you dont see every day.

Not true. In downtown Glendale there is an In and Out that takes up part of a large building that is connected to the Eastern-most part of the enormous Glendale Galleria. There's a ton of indoor seating but, oddly enough, no drive-thru.

I think that this was most likely the thinking that the developers had. The place will most likely be very successful simply because the immediate area is short on shopping and dining options. Still, I wish they'd been a little more ambitious with their offerings.

As for the target demographic, it sounds like they are aiming for people with a lot of money who live in a mud hut someplace with no access to the outside world. I'm not sure how many people out there are like that.

There is also a McCormick and Kuleto's in Ghirardelli Square, and a Kuleto's about 3 miles from me, which is an Italian place (I think, haven't bothered to go).

These are all about the same sorts of places.

I mean, these are all nice sorts of things. And I'm sure people will enjoy them, but I see nothing special in any of this.

If there was something there that I could not get anywhere close to home, I'd make a trip, and that's what is likely talked about in post 84.

But the main thing I can't get close to my house when I go to Disneyland is Disneyland and DTD (although we have something a bit similar and nicer than DTD in Santana Row).

So, I'm not going to travel 500 miles and spend hundreds of dollars just to visit a Cinnabon.

You're speaking out of your hindquarters on this one Jon. You may know a great many things, but how busy, or well H&M is doing in SF is quite beyond you. They already have 3 stores in a 3 block downtown radius. Rest assured that H&M continues to expand in the United States, and has a few stores in So. Cal already.

There is an In-N-Out in the Fisherman's Wharf area of SF that is not in a stand alone building. FYI.

I think that it runs neck and neck with Applebees. They both have their place, and a few things that are good, but the price is steep.

They opened a third? That's nice.

The first couple of days, there was a huge line to get into the place. Those first couple of days they were very crowded. I guess I didn't say that right.

"I think that it runs neck and neck with Applebees."

I can NOT believe how much money Applebees is. Ihop just bought them a few months ago.

Yeah, Applebees is flat scary. I'm no fan at all.

Yes, I am aware what the Emporium was-I worked in Credit for 5 years in one of the San Jose stores. I just was not sure that was what was meant when the "Emporium" was mentioned in the original post.

That and the Stanford Shopping Center are probably the two nicest malls in the area now. The mall nearest me, Hillsdale, is pretty nice, too, actually. It's filled Bufano statues, which is pretty unique.

The SF Center Mall is where the Emporium store used to be on Market Street. They've saved a few details from that store and have incorporated it into the mall design in an incredible manner.
