I have heard of satire and hyperbole, but Coulter's not doing that, and anyone who believes otherwise, is just desperate to march lockstep with their fellow conservatives. Ann Coulter said that 9/11 widows were enjoying their husbands deaths - hahahahaha!!! Oh, that's good times! Simply hilarious - what a clever bit of sarcasm! Wow, I wish I could be that witty and sharp! Nope, don't think so. Of course, I'm sure those who defend Coulter by saying it's just "sarcasm and hyperbole" will be just as quick to defend moveon.org, Cindy Sheehan, and Michael Moore the same way.

Conservatives are so hyper-sensitive with their fake outrage anytime someone says something they don't like about their country, that it's astounding that when Coulter says 9/11 widows are enjoying their husband's deaths (and could there be anything less patriotic than saying that?) people actually manage to defend it. Wow.

Or someone here could say I deserve my health problems because I'm gay. All of this is OK, you say, because it's said in satire and hyperbole? Uh-uh. (And for the record, I don't believe any of the above statements; I am trying to make a point here. I wouldn't say them, even in jest.)

Someohow that post got deleted. Second are you going to tell me that conservatives and liberals in the media are given equal treatment? That's simply a lie. Now the Hannity's and Rushes of the world won't give a pass to someone like Coutler and that's very hypocritical. But at the same time it's equally hypocritical that outlets like CNN, MSNBC, CBS and just about every newspaper arent' condemning something that a say a Rosie O'Donell says or does. Like always it has to be a two way street. If it's wrong for one group it's wrong for the other. Period end of story.

Just like Cindy Sheehan did. Whenever you enter the poltical arena in this regard, you should fully expect to be challenged on these statements. Tragedy does not exempt you from this. Of course Ann Coutler is too stupid to realize this.

That's simply a lie.<< The only lie is the myth of the "liberal" media. As has been pointed out here before (superbly by Dabob), while individual newsmen and women tend to lean left, the corporations that own the vast, vast majority of news organizations are all Republican friendly. I think the media is about ratings, nothing more. If they can cover a story about John Kerry botching a joke or Howard Dean yelling, they'll do it. How well did that turn out for those guys? Likewise, if they can cover a story on Mitt Romney's hunting or Trent Lott's endorsement of Strom Thurmond, they'll do it. I think the only reason conservatives think the media is liberal is because they view the world in black and white terms - their terms, and the other sides. As others have said, if you're standing on the north pole, every direction is south. If conservatives hear a news story that doesn't espouse their perspective, suddenly, it's "liberal". It's not an either/or proposition. There's middle ground, nuance, etc. Time and time again we see the flaw in the "media is liberal" argument. Yet conservatives see the "evidence" for it anytime they see a story that dares to question conservatives or not paint a rosy picture of everything Republicans are doing.

Or even acknowledge that it may have been inappropriate - at best? No, she doesn't. She instead tries (again) to chalk it up to "liberals" with no sense of humor. The unspoken assumption being that she enjoys widespread support from those who do "get it". Except no one is stepping forward to endorse her position. Except maybe for JohnS1. >> Judging by his fundraising efforts so far, I gather most of you don't know who John Edwards is — unless you're an overpriced hair dresser. << Digging her hole even deeper. It must be her "lively way" that people are objecting to. >> Thus, for example, in a column about the Democratic candidates for president written in 2003, I pointed out that the Democrats refused to discuss the economy or the war << Thanks for pointing that out, ann. Except that my recollection was that the war was discussed in some depth by the democratic presidential candidates. But she has the insider's perspective. >> If you want points for not using your son's death politically, don't you have to take down all those "Ask me about my son's death in a horrific car accident" bumper stickers? << Excuse me - who is it again who's using edward's son's death for political purposes? And doing so in about the most offensive way possible? >> Manifestly, I was not making fun of their son's death << Thanks for clearing that up. For a minute there I was confused about the bumper sticker thing. >> From now on, I'm attacking only serious presidential candidates, like Dennis Kucinich." << More of that famous coulter wit. Maybe it never occured to her to not attack people at all. Nah. She reveals herself as a thoroughly loathesome person every time she opens her mouth or writes down her thoughts. Which is all too often.

Good grief.> Since you seemingly don't quite grasp her technique, this is what she does: She says something over the top like "driven by Satan," that could obviously be defended as hyperbole. But then she adds "and lie constantly." Then she goes on to give what she claims are examples - not of anyone being driven by Satan, but of "lying" (though most are pretty weak examples, of course). What she wants you to be left with is a chuckle (if you're inclined to find "driven by Satan" funny) and a lingering thought of "okay, maybe not driven by Satan, but definitely liberals lie constantly." It's designed to make conservatives feel like they're "better" than those lying liberals, and semi-unconsiously think that liberals DO lie as a matter of course, and this is why it ends up being completely divisive. It's only a semi-sophisticated debating technique, easily seen through if you know what to look for.
