The thing is, we don't see the handwringers of the press corps go into a tizzy about mean spiritedness of the Left when they do something outrageous (nope, Matt Lauer just laughs when Al Franken calls for someone to be killed). But woe unto the conservative who gives them a taste of their own medicine to point out an underlying truth, as Ann Coulter does.

    But, I'm curious:

When did Matt Lauer laugh at Al Franken saying someone should be killed?

When did Al Franken say that someone should be killed?

It kind of cancels out your argument because it makes you just like the people you supposedly dispise.

It seems, also, that there is a real problem on LP (and elsewhere) where people insult the left/right, libs/neocons. Usually we are talking about political leaders or prominent figures, yet, I'm a liberal, so I am automatically insulted.

I think we need to make a distinction between what politicans do and what the people of America do. Lumping us into categories isn't fair and it ruins any point that is trying to be made.

No. You were calling people here a name that you use as an insult.

In other words, you attacked people here.

I said nothing of the kind. I was referring to the political Left in general, which means those in the country as a whole who fixate on Ann Coulter. I've as much a right to register my feelings on that subject as anyone else on any other part of the spectrum does, but that elementary fact appears to be lost on those who'd rather register personal attacks just because of my particular POV.

Defending a POV with vigor is not a personal attack here, unless you believe that the First Amendment is only for you and your POV and not for others.

And since the only personal attack by name that's taken place here has been aimed at me, then the hypocrisy of what you say only becomes more self-evident.

So, you are equating that joke to what Ann Coulter said, are you? OK.

"what she's said as part of the "extreme right""

And what, exactly, would you consider the "extreme right?"

"I don't think is an accurate characterization myself"

I would say you are in the extreme right.

"You at least don't see me calling that a personal attack insult."

I really don't care what you call it. However, when you use a term towards other posters here in an insulting manner, it is an insult, and that is what you have done.

Another nice case of the Left and their "Free speech for me, but not for thee" axiom.

The "extreme right" would refer to the kind of wacko groups that were booted out of mainstream conservatism decades ago like the John Birch Society, and also to fringe cases like Pat Buchanan with his unreconstructed 1930s isolationism that also no longer has a home in mainstream conservatism for all intents and purposes. One thing it doesn't refer to are those who stand for the Reagan conservative principles.

There is nothing wrong with defending a POV. There is something wrong when you decide to start calling other posters names. You don't have to use profanity in order to defame or insult others.

If you can't defend a POV without including some sort of antagonistic statement about other people, then really, then first you have a very weak argument, and second you come across as a troll.

Just like in the DVC threads, you don't want to accept that some of the treatment you are getting just might have something to do with your own actions.

I would say, no, not like what she said. And even if you consider what Al Franken said to be wrong, that is no excuse for someone else to do further wrong, nor to defend it.
