George Bush I campaigned as the third Reagan term, and that is when he turned a 17 point defecit in the polls into victory when he rebuked Michael Dukakis's declaration that ideology did not matter in the campaign. It was when George Bush governed as a liberal instead of a conservative that he lost the support of the Reagan coalition and lost for a second term. His defeat was not a referendum on conservatism, but on a failed president who didn't honor the principles he got elected on. Two years after George Bush I went down to defeat, we had the election of 1994.
