I think it struck a nerve with me because I lost my younger cousin just this last New Years Eve very suddenly. She was too young and it was too soon. Debbie also has great concerns over Katherine immediately putting the kids into the Jehovah's Witness faith, dragging them to Kingdom Hall services (which are attended 3 times a week) as they were not raised in that and shouldn't have to suffer not having birthdays or holidays on top of their considerable grief. Honestly, I think Janet is going to just end up with them, and at this point in her life, it's probably the best thing that could happen to her.
