It's clear that the two were designed to work together, and they both went from being sadly average movies to being very very strong. I'm sure there are still things in each of them that I haven't caught, as well as connections between the two (like when Tia Dalma says "You have a touch of destiny about you" the first time she sees Will) that make both of them work really well together.
