    So what happens? You have unmotivated, demoralized employees. You have high turn-over. You have job dissatisfaction. Which leads to--yup, you guessed it--more whining about the government. Why are government employees so grumpy? Why aren't they more helpful?

    Maybe if DMV employees were allowed to go to the occasional conference or retreat, the DMV would be a lot more efficient.

    Well not if it's using the bailout money.

    I don't have a problem with the conference. I'm just trying to figure out why it cost $700k

    Not really a big sum of money for a large organization. In some of the organizations I've worked for, we'll burn $700K in diesel fuel every week.

    Now the cost for conferences:

    PR and Organisation
    Booking management
    venues
    transportation
    accommodation
    food
    PA and lighting
    Set design (if needed)
    Speakers costs - typically from free to $40,000 dependent on whom
    Staffing - stewards, facilitators, catering

    Sounds like a bargain to me.

    Honestly, the people that look at government budgets and think they run like household budgets.
