I have not been on the Mad Tea Party -Teacups for many years and do not plan to go on them.

My wife won't do rollercoasters or motion rides (like Star Tours) at all, and she still has a great time. She doesn't mind Soarin at all, but won't do Indy.

Agree with the advice - start with your doctor. there are always new treatments coming along which might help manage your vertigo, and you can work your way up.

I've heard the problem with rides like Star Tours which don't move too much is that if they don't perfectly sync the car motion with the screen movement, that is what can cause the disorientation (e.g. screen shows right movement, but the car doesn't move until a second later).

The same would apply to GRR. If I were ever to make it to DCA on a rainy day.

Of course, this depends on having my sou'wester handy: raising an umbrella on a thrill ride would be a very bad idea indeed: somebody could get injured!

I don't do thrill rides very much any more, actually. Especially if my back feels like it wants to make an unscheduled visit to the People's Democratic Republic of Lumbago.

But I do Soarin' almost every time I visit DCA.

Note that I don't suffer from vertigo, or from acrophobia, but I do suffer from an affliction that Mel Brooks dubbed, "High Anxiety." I'm not afraid of heights; just of falling from them. I feel very safe on Soarin'; the seat belts feel very secure.

My dad's vertigo is triggered by some rides though, so he's always more cautious. I did tell him it would be worth it to try Soarin' though on his last trip, with the same advice people have given here - to just close his eyes if necessary. It was fine. He also went on Indy and didn't have a problem with it, which surprised me, but he wouldn't touch Space Mountain or Screamin'. I agree with the advice to check with a doctor. You never know, it could help. Good luck!

We're leaving tomorrow at 3am for our trip to disneyland and I'm sooo excited to be trying something new.
For Soarin, I'm going to ask for the last row and for Indy I'm going to try and get more to the center.
With everyone's advice I feel really confident in giving it a go! I'll make sure to do an update next week when we get back. I'm off to bed now. 3am comes awfully early!

The only ride to stay away from (even while taking Dramamine) is California Scream'in.
    Hope this helps!

Westwind, I feel the same way. I can do all the coaster and ToT madness, but have a real problem with the going in circle rides, especially the Tea Cups. I can look at the steering wheel, but the minute I look out, I get dizzy and not in a good way.

As for riding upside down rides, I have always been able to do them, but never could keep my eyes open. It wasn't until a few years ago that I conquered this fear, but I still just look straight ahead at the tracks and if I look out to the left or right as the car goes upside down, I get that icky dizzy feeling.

Another thing I used to do is hold my breath - this is the wrong thing to do. It feeds the anxiety. Now I just take a deep breath right before it goes upside down and exhale as it's going over. Or I just scream (like I do on ToT). Either way, I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway, to fight the dizzy feeling, I have been taking ginger root supplements. I can now do Soarin and absolutely love it.
I take ginger root every day, and it is making a difference.
I have done the looping coaster but don't like that one I love ToT and have toleration for Thunder Mt. Grizzly Rapids is challenging at the end of the ride with the spinning but I have learned to focus on one thing. I love everything about Disneyland and for all the rides I can't do, there are many to do.

If it's going to be a long park day for you, consider taking a second dose late in the day. During my last trip, I was taking one every morning, but on my final day, I had two late Fastpasses for Star Tours. The first ride was fine, but I encountered both Hoth and Boba Fett on the second ride and was feeling pretty cruddy for quite a while afterward.

I hope things went well for you, Jenn31! I feel for you with the vertigo because I've had to deal with flare-ups of it while on Disney trips before and just didn't go certain attractions. (And vertigo just stinks in general!)

As I got older, I started chickening out and stopped going on those rides, mainly because I didn't want to get motion sickness. I moved to California in 2003 and started visiting DLR at least twice a year. Now, there were even more rides to be a chicken about, like Soarin' and Indy. After a few years of watching my wife go on these rides by herself, I finally got up the nerve to ride Soarin. My hands were a clammy mess and my very first ride was the highest level, front and center. But I found that I had nothing to be afraid of and was sad that I could have been enjoying Soarin for years. I then moved back to Hawaii a couple of years ago but went on vacation to California last year. I made up my mind to try and ride Indy because I just thought that who knows when the next time I'll get the chance to ride it would be. With the help of some anxiety medication, I rode it and had the time of my life on it. After that, I wanted to ride it over and over. And once again, I was sad that I could've been enjoying Indy for years. And on Splash Mountain, I even raised my arms on the drop. That was so fun! On my next trip, I'm going to try and ride Thunder Mountain and Star Tours again. I think I'll even try Matterhorn. Not so sure about Space Mountain though. And although my wife loves Tower of Terror, that's one ride I don't think I can ride on.

Anyway, I hope you had a great time at DLR!

At my office, one of the perks was having one of our clients (a licensed massage therapist) come in a couple of times a year and give everyone massages. Well, one day, after getting the massage, I noticed my vertigo had gone away.

Something those of you with vertigo might think about getting.
