Actually, he could hardly have been more wrong.

Not so much about McNabb himself, who was good but a bit overrated. QB's get overrated all the time when their teams do well.

But what Limbaugh said was that McNabb was overrated BECAUSE he was black, because the NFL and the media - in this horrible conspiracy of the sort he pulls out of his rear quarters regularly - "needed" there to be a "successful black quarterback."

Putting aside the obvious racism for a second, the first thing I thought when he said that was "where has Limbaugh been?" That statement only even approaches making sense if McNabb was the only successful black quarterback in the league, therefore the conspirators felt they had to build him up. But this was far from the case. At the time he said it, you had Steve McNair (just one season removed from taking the Titans to the AFC Championship Game IIRC), you had Dante Culpepper (who kind of flamed out, but who at the time was one of the top QB's), you had Michael Vick... so the statement made no sense. It was as if Limbaugh thought we were still back in the 70's when black quarterbacks were rare and somehow exotic.

I mean hell, McNabb wasn't even the first successful black quarterback IN PHILLY (!)

And I just remember thinking that Limbaugh was not only a racist idiot, he couldn't even have been much of a football fan.

Not to mention that the Washington Redskins won a Super Bowl with QB Doug Williams -- in 1988.

Exactly. And he was yanked off the air because it was a racist comment-- not merely "politically incorrect" as he'd like everyone to believe.

Which brings us back to Hank Williams Jr. He says this stupid thing and then, with pride, says "Well, if you ask for my opinion, you're gonna get it." As if his dumb comment is something brave to say--"Everyone's thinkin' it, but I got the guts to SAY it. Yay for me."

    Dope.

I know you were. But Limbaugh's point was not to call him overrated - dozens of players are, arguably. He only brought it up to try to make some political point about the NFL "needing" a black QB to succeed - when plenty already had, or were currently doing so. HE was injecting race where it didn't belong; if you think McNabb's overrated, fine. Say that. What he said made no sense whatsoever, but told us plenty about Limbaugh.

Matt Millen I'm looking in your general direction.

Never came off as spontaneous.

He would then try too hard to be "one of the guys." Seriously Dennis - you can't be Mr. Hip-and-erudite one moment and Mr. Blue Collar the next. As annoying as he could sometimes be, Cosell showed that you didn't have to pretend to be anything you weren't; just be yourself, and it will work in context with the other guys - sometimes the contrast is the fun.
