Having said that, let me take exception (and everything's just an opinion) to three things:

1). Over half the list is of songs from just the past dozen years. That emphasis seems off.

2). I agree that "You Can Fly You Can Fly" is THE song from Peter Pan (especially since it was used so well in the PP attractions at the parks). Shoulda made the list.

3). Most important... ONE song from Pinnochio, the greatest animated movie ever made? ONE??? I'd put An Actor's Life For Me, I've Go No Strings, and possibly Give a Little Whistle over quite a few of your choices. They all do exactly what songs in musicals are supposed to do, they all hold up 60 years later, and they have none of the sappiness that afflicts some of the more modern Disney songs. I mean, three from Hercules, three from Pocahontas (and one from Pocahantas II!) but ONE from Pinocchio???

Just so you don't think I don't like modern Disney songs, I agree with including all the B&TB songs (the score is that good), and "When She Loved Me" would make my top 10.

Personally, I felt Disney has had a drought of good songs from Animated Features lately. While I did enjoy "Reflections" in Mulan, the rest of the soundtrack left me cold. Tarzan was also quality, but too "pop-like" for my tastes. The last Disney soundtrack I truly loved was "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." I really wish they'd do a stage version here in the U.S. The show at the Studios is incredible.

Does anyone know what Alan Menken is up to lately?

"America Sings" was various traditional songs of Americana, not original songs, so no mention on the list. I loved that show too, btw.

Remember, this list were my choices for the top 101. They won't necessarily reflect everybody or anybody else's opinions. Half the fun of these endeavors is to see how you agree/disagree with the author.

I personally am not a big fan of "Unbirthday Song", "You Can Fly", "Beautiful Briny" or the other "Pinocchio" songs, thus their exclusion from the list.

On the other hand, I am a big fan of the scores to "Pocahontas", "Hercules", "Mulan" and especially "Hunchback of Notre Dame", one of the best scores to a movie musical, animated or live action.

Thus I don't find it "excessively silly" to include the songs from those films, songs that I personally enjoy.

Again, if you disagree, that's fine.

Actually, the song "In Harmony" from the "Little Mermaid" tv show was considered. It didn't make the list mostly because it's a little too derivative of "Under the Sea".

Alan Menken was working on the now in limbo "Roger Rabbit" sequel. He is currently writing the songs and score for the upcoming animated musical "Sweating Bullets".

I enjoyed the list of the 101 Greatest Disney Songs of all time.

    Thanks ToonKirby!

But, more importantly, where's My Pretty Irish Girl?! That's probably the greatest Disney love song ever, from one of the greatest live action Disney movies ever. Plus, it's the only time you'll ever hear Sean Connery sing, so why did it get dropped? Maybe this is just coming from too many viewings of the movie as a kid... but that movie and me have some great memories. :)

A side note concerning "What Can You Lose?" from "Dick Tracy". The brilliant Judy Kuhn does a beautiful rendition of the song on the CD "Unsung Sondheim". It breaks my heart every time I listen to it.

Also, I'm glad I'm not alone in my admiration of the score from "Hunchback of Notre Dame", one of the most criminally unappreciated scores of our time. It mystifies me that none of the songs from this masterpiece was nominated for the "Best Song" Oscar. Oh well...

    Again, great job.

And of course, "King of New York," as well as "Santa Fe," and the Banner Reprise, it had an incredible music line!

My family and I would listen to the entire track on our vacations.

I agree that Michelle Nicastro can be excessively perky (note my comment in the "Part of Your World" entry), but her creative (and highly entertaining) versions of such songs as "Heigh Ho" and "Bibbiddi Bobbiddi Boo" can't be ignored. And her excesses are generally toned down on ballads such as "Feed the Birds" and "Someone's Waiting For You".

Glad you enjoy "Pretty Irish Girl", can't say it ever did anything for me.

    Todd:

Thanks so much for the heads-up on that CD. There are SO many Sondheim albums out there, it's hard to keep track of them all. Will have to order this one from Amazon.

And you're right, Judy Kuhn is brilliant. I saw her sing "Colors of the Wind" live at Epcot a few summers ago ... what a voice.

    Uruseiranma:

I love the songs from "Newsies", but since most of them are in the same style, I chose "Seize the Day" to best represent the film.

Btw, "Newsies" is coming out in a special edition DVD in November.

And I'm glad you put a couple of songs from Hercules. I think I'm one of like a dozen people who actually loved the songs from Hercules!

Is it called "Why don't you do right?" - I love that song!!!

    1) for the song "Beauty & the Beast" (#57), the Diamond Rio version on THE BEST OF COUNTRY SINGS THE BEST OF DISNEY is excellent. They added a mandolin to the orchestration which provides just that little extra to make it a truly memorable version.
    2) on the stage version of BATB, "If I Can't Love Her", Hugh Jackman is mentioned. Hugh did the Australian cast as Gaston. A cast recording is available and quite often found on E-Bay (just ordered one myself - usually found by searching for Beast and Jackman).

Great list by the way, but I would have also included "The Bells of Notre Dame".
Also, in your list of greatest animated movie moments the "Hellfire" sequence was included but the song wasn't on this list. That's not a criticism just something I thought of. I assume it's because of the way that that scene was quite ground breaking rather than because of the music.

Also, I'm quite happy about the slant towards the more modern because I feel that the period we are just coming out of had some of the best Disney music ever and without it the movies would arguably have been less than they became!!!

Going through the list was a blast, as I sang through the excerpted lyrics (nice touch!). Amazing to me, was how many songs I haven't heard.
I think you should have limited the songs to just one per production, though. I feel like there was SOOOOO much that got left out, it might have made an interesting parameter to add.
BTW, Hunchback is the most fabulous soundtrack out there. I wasn't all that thrilled with the film, but I have damn near worn out my CD (if they CAN be worn out<G>). My record of Mary Poppins was also well worn - my brother and I spent HOURS memorizing the lyrics. Feed the Birds has to be my #1, too, way before I knew it was Walt's favorite (just confirms my good opinion of him<G>).
And am I the only one who thought that 'Kiss the Girl' had it WAY over 'Under the Sea'? Moved the plot along, great tune, drama, wonderfully playful lyrics... I liked UTS, but by my understanding of Academy logic (not very great, I'll admit), KTG should have been the hands down winner. (Then again, I thought that 'Ghostbusters' was a better choice than 'I just Called', which won.)
Thanks ToonKirby for having the courage to put your opinions out there!!
