After all the politics and negativity is over, there is still the wonder and excitement of the Disney output set apart by more than a name but by an idea--Disney Magic.

    Thanks Ken for reminding us!

Now, for my 18th birthday, I am going to the only place thinkable...WDW. I wouldn't go anywhere else. For anyone who has dreams and ambitions, the Disney Magic is there. If you feel it, you know it. If you don't, sadly, there's no hope. I'm the only one in my family who really feels the Magic, so it is frustrating. But no matter...I will always believe.

I have gotten lots of feedback about this one. Only one private feedback (so far) has been less than enthusiastic. it helps when you include your e-mail addres in that form of communication (this person didn't) so that I can respond directly. Maybe I'll have to start with the regular "reader e-mail" columns like some folks do?

Only if they're a supplement and not a substitute. I prefer real columns. I always liken the reader email so-called columns to be the equivalent of compilation/clip shows of a television series. No budget, no ideas, so let's just throw random stuff together.

I'm so moved by this article. I'm sitting at work with tears streaming down my face but with a glow of love and happiness inside from Disney Magic. This belief is what gets me through everyday. I do believe because I feel it inside my soul and I'm a better person for it. I try to raise my kids with the Disney belief, that all things are possible if you just Believe in it. It's why I spend my last extra (and sometimes not extra) dollar saving to spend on going to Disneyland or buying my Disney things that surround me with happiness.

Thank you so much for this. It has refueled my Disney love for today and for future days ahead.

California Adventure Is Just Big Business

    >>Ever since Walt Disney Co. opened California Adventure, I've read The Times' stories with interest about the park struggling ["Theme Parks Still Looking for Visitors," Aug. 24].

What never gets mentioned in your articles is one simple, underlying truth: Disneyland was founded in innocent times by a creative genius with a magical vision for something totally new, innovative and spectacularly fun, that would also make money and keep Mickey Mouse in the public eye.

California Adventure was founded in the 1990s by a board of directors looking for new revenue streams, market share and a way to grow the value of Disney's stock. I won't even cast negative light on that; it's just pure and simple business.

But the public knows or senses this, which is why they aren't returning.

Just walk around California Adventure. My recollection is a park jammed with booths, every single one requiring financial participation.

I felt absolutely no cultural nourishment; instead, I subtly felt like a sucker for just another big-business venture.

So does some parts of what Disney offers have more Magic associated with it than others???

Does ABC, ESPN, etc... have Disney Magic????

How about movies, does Lilo and Stitch have more Magic than the Country Bears movie?????

I think that is self-evident. I do mention in my column that Disney magic does not blanket everything The Walt Disney Company does.

I'm certainly not going to pretend there are no flaws.

It is just that, every once in a while, it is nice to sit back and remember what made Disney special to us in the first place - that Disney Magic that DOES still make its way into some of the things we experience.

There would be NO LaughingPlace.com (I'm talking the nature of this site, not the actual name) if Disney was nothing special.

P.S.- I think Doobie should post your article, or a version of it, every year too! However, wouldn't Walt's birthday be a better day for it than Christmas?
