Are California jury's more sympathetic, sometimes to excess than some other "more conservative shall we say" states?

California has more than 10% of the nations population, and is the single largest state in terms of the population. For that alone, you will hear more things coming from here than you would other places.

If you notice that stories of weird cases and excessive awards come out of California more than other states my guess is that is because we are hugely populated. With approx. 37 million out of the US's 300 you can see why we are overrepresented.

But in CA and NY, someone in the media says "did you hear about the weird court case where they...(fill in the blank)" - someone checks it out, and suddenly it gets wider exposure than a similar case in Nebraska ever would.

Now, if we specifically talk about killing people in the name of "justice" then Texas is the undisputed heavy weight champion here in the US. For those looking to commit a murder with some special circumstances like robbery, "cop killing", abductions or rapes I would strongly say don't do it in Texas or you might well find yourself on a 8-15 year sojourn just outside of Houston in the intimate community of Huntsville and ultimately strapped to a table and unwillingly given some high doses of thiopental, bromide and clorine in your arm.
