KFI had a mix of right-wing nutjobs, moderates, liberals, and just plain weirdness (see: The Jesus Christ Show). They were having trouble with listener tuneouts, i.e. the Rush fans weren't staying for the other shows. By piling all the nuts on the same station - which is getting renamed KEIB by the way, after Rush's fictional network - they're hoping to keep the conservative audience 24/7. KTLK, like KFI, is 50,000 watts, the maximum allowed on AM radio in the US. (Compare with KFWB - 5000 watts!) It's true that KFI has a larger coverage area, but that's only because it's on a lower frequency and is a "clear channel" station (by the original definition: A signal that's regionally protected during nighttime hours). The outer portions of KFI's coverage area have their own Rush affiliates, while the new shows on KFI, which are not duplicated in other markets, will get wider reach. it makes sense. This won't change a thing, except for those listeners who are too dumb to figure out how to change the station. I'm sure there will be some.

San Diego fans of Rush are already listening to him on the San Diego station. Conservative talk radio isn't being marginalized in LA, just consolidated. Prediction: Rush's LA ratings will have a small hiccup (to great HuffPo/MediaMatters fanfare), then go right back up to where they were (to the sound of crickets). Just like his ad revenue right after the Sandra Fluke thing.

One thing I do know about Howard Hoffman, and that is he doesn't know how to read coverage maps. "It doesn't go south of Long Beach" huh? Here's his map. (His link is outdated because of the call sign change.) http://www.radio-locator.com/c...&hours=D I see a local signal that goes from Oxnard to San Juan Capistrano. As a resident of Central Orange County, I can assure you that KTLK comes in here just fine. Not as strong as KFI, but KFI's tower is in Buena Park, so what do you expect? Again (and again and again), KFI's coverage area doesn't matter when it overlaps other markets. Regional clear channel broadcasting has been over for decades, and even Howard Hoffman knows it. San Diego and San Bernardino are not going to listen to KFI, no matter how good its signal is, any more than the people in Orange County are going to listen to Rush on KOGO or KTIE. The extra coverage area is worthless if it duplicates programs on local stations. As for his contention about Rush's ratings decline on KFI ... link please?
