As a result of that experience I still regularly tip in hotel rooms if I'm going to be staying more than a day or two. On my honeymoon I saw the housekeeper the first day and tipped her a $20. I asked her to take care of the room and I would take care of her at the end of the week. The room was immaculate, I always had clean towels and fresh amenities, and it was a wonderful week.
