The result is that other pests often survive. Although divided over why bed bugs are thriving, experts agree that the insects are not a public health threat. Unlike mosquitoes, which can transmit malaria, yellow fever and West Nile virus, bed bugs have not been linked to anything more serious than the itchy, red welts that often appear on a victim’s skin. “There are no studies that have been done that show they vector anything,†said Bill Brogdon, an entomologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Hepatitis B has been specifically looked for and the studies have been negative so far.â€<< Small comfort, I know.

If there were several people that can say that they had the same problem than I may consider staying somewhere else. Also I am sure that if CCI is aware of the problem they would have taken measures to remedy it. This type of thing could happen anywhere. I will be staying here in November I will let you know how it goes.

It is inevitable... any hotel will get them from time to time. As for the CCI lying... try calling up the DLH and asking them if they have ever had a complaint about bed bugs. Do you think they will 'fess up to it? Much ado about nothing as far as I'm concerned. As 2oonies post pointed out, the little suckers aren't even a health issue... just a nuisance. Relax guys. I've never stayed at the CCI, but I would have no problem booking with them on my next trip to DL. By the way... the Candy Cane Inn ranks #1 in popularity at the tripadvisor.com website. I've found the rankings at that site to be extremely reliable and would certainly trust it more than an isolated report. (Not that I think the OP is being deceptive in any way. I just don’t think it is representative of people’s experiences with the Candy Cane Inn.) As the article said, this is a growing problem. If you travel, you take a chance of encountering bed bugs. True, they don't cause disease, but as I witnessed, the bites itch like crazy and are very unattractive (large and pus filled).

As I have and others have said-this is happening at all price levels so if ya think that staying at the GC or the DH will keep you more protected from bedbugs-you are wrong. Not only don't the bedbugs know that there is a price difference neither do the rodents!

As stated previously, this is the first time we will be staying there in several years, but we were very pleased with the hotel in the past. After some calm reflections on the entire subject, we felt that it can happen anywhere we stay so what is the point in moving?

They're just trying to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter - and have a bit of a 'meal.' ;-) I'm just saying that there are a lot of different little buggies out there that like to nibble people parts... not just bedbugs.

They are incredibly hard to get rid of, and whether they transmit disease or not, I'm sure no one would want to live with them 24/7! I saw an article in the New York Times that recommended leaving your luggage outside in either very hot or very cold weather before you bring it in your house. Yikes!
