While I think this is being a bit overblown (predictible though - the news channels have to talk about something), it certainly can be read as a dis of the previous candidates, as though Obama were the first black candidate who was bright and articulate and clean. (I did love Jackson pointing out that he did much better in '88 than Biden did).

But why would anyone need to comment on it? That said, I am inclined to believe that Biden simply misspoke. When I first heard the sound bite, I assumed he fumbled the words "clean cut." But even that is a bit disconcerting. Why the need to assert that an African American is clean cut? And Biden was clearly talking about the fact that Obama is African-American. I am absoultely certain that if any Republican, running for office or not, had made the same word-for-word statement, he would have been forced to offer myriad apologies to every civil rights group in the country.
