Gilligan knows we've all seen similar situations before, and the call to Marie makes us think "Call her later! Get out of there! Uncle Jack is coming!" and of course the final "I love you" could be his final words... but because that's such a cliche, maybe it's a feint. I want Hank to live, but it's hard to see him (or Gomie) surviving, considering they're facing a greater number of guys, with superior firepower. I want Jesse to live even more than I want Hank to live... I guess he could make a mad escape in the car - the gang has missed so many shots already I could certainly buy them missing a moving target, and they'd be pinned down by Hank/Gomie's fire - so there's that. But I don't know how Hank lives, unless... just go with me here... They've made an awful lot of noise with this shootout, perhaps enough for someone on the reservation to hear and report. With all the shoutouts to classic Westerns Gilligan has made, how delicious an inversion of Westerns would it be if the Tribal police came... the Indians (!) serving as the "cavalry" saving the day (or at least creating enough confusion for the principals to escape.) Probably won't happen - but it WOULD be a wonderful inversion of classic Westerns.

Obviously, he was trying to save her from prison by leaving a long confession/rant deflecting any responsibility she might have had in his life of crime. How any longtime viewer could be confused by that surprises me.

What was amazing about that rant of Walter's on the phone was that it was simultaneously 1). Walter absolving Skylar of responsibility for the sake of the police he knew were listening (note he destroyed his phone as soon as the call was over), saying she didn't know what we was doing, and threatening her such that she could later claim that anything she did, she did under duress (which was at least sometimes true, after all); 2). Walter/Heisenberg saying terrible things to her that were always bubbling just under the surface in Walt, in a particularly nasty way... yes, he did it partly for her benefit, and yet they ALSO came from a disgustingly real place, as he's always looking for someone to blame other than himself when things go wrong; 3). a rebuke to the "Skylar-haters" out there in the fanbase who see Skylar as nothing but a big emasculating buzzkill of a woman... by making it so brutally ugly and making it clear that Walt was lying, it was essentially an "in your face" to the Skylar haters out there - letting them see what such hate really looked like. That it was all three simultaneously was just great writing. And of course Cranston nailed the contradictions.

He's quite obviously not ONLY doing it to absolve Skyler from blame. It was a highlight in an episode of highlights. I have a hard time believing the last two eps will top this one. But if any show can, it'll be BB.
