If you understood the legal profession, you'd know that while being the head of a bar association is certainly an honorable thing, it's hardly an immediate stepping stone to the United States Supreme Court. often it's merely a popularity contest. And it may be a nice bit on a resume to be a local judge, but in no way to the highest court in the land. To illustrate, within the last couple of years, a local L.A. County D.A. (a woman, as a matter of fact) was the head of the California State Bar. She's hoping, much more realistically, to become a local bench officer at some point. As for Reid, I'd say he suckered Bush, but good. And as for Gonzales, do we really expect him to say anything else? I was certain he'd be the next nominee after roberts, and after this unmitigated disaster, I expect he'll be the one now. At least he's got some qualifications behind him, among them being a former Texas Supreme Court justice.

So the next time someone bashes Clinton or Kerry or some other similar thing I fully expect you to chime in and say there's no value to it, because one is out of office and the other never got there. Otherwise, you'd be a hypocrite.

You don't get to where she was in life by being an idiot as some like to portray her as. But was she the best choice Bush could have made after he promised his base someone in the mold of Scalia and Thomas?? No. So now Bush can take her withdrawl and claim that he tried to nominate a moderate, someone the other side might even like. Once that didn't work he has decided to do what he promised to do in the first place... nominate a conservative that the kooks from the left want to fillibuster.

Wow, Rush must be spinnin' hard this morning. LOL!

Originally Posted By TomSawyer >>Seems to me that Rove and company have outsmarted the Dems again..lol<< Not at all. Reid played this one perfectly. He recommended Miers, a more moderate choice. And he knew the far right would be upset that one of their chosen few wasn't selected. Then the Democrats sat back and watched as the right destroyed her nomination and got angry at the President. Then the nomination was withdrawn with some spin about executive privilege when it really had more to do with the threat of a filibuster from some of the right-wing members of Congress. Now if the president comes back with a more reactionary nominee in obedience to the demands of the far right, the Democrats can say they could have supported the moderate Miers but they can't support the new far-right nominee now before them. They can make the argument that Bush withdrew Miers at the behest of the far right wing. Reid played this one perfectly.

They must know that now that this little conservative argument is over regarding Miers, they are going to have to face a nominee that the entire conservative base will get behind. When the entire conservative base is on the same page the demcrats and the liberals have no chance... they know this and see what is coming.

Easy. Reid could publicly and even privately throw all his support behind Miers knowing she doesn't stand a snowball's chance with the whacked out extreme right, who would and surely did torpedo this nomination. A Scalia clone also stands a snowball's chance because the Republican moderates won't go for it. The Roberts nomination should be a blueprint for this next one. If it isn't, too bad for Bush. His hands will be full dealing with the Plame fiasco and he won't have Delay available to bully people, either. The extreme right needs to recognize that by doing in Miers themselves, who shouldn't have been nominated anyway, they've exposed how to create a schism in the party. And the overall party for them is effectively over.

If the senate Republicans won't support this conservative nominee, then fine... we know who to run out of congress. Janice Rogers Brown come on!!!

I would buy this if you could show me just what major group of Republicans are really, really upset that Meirs is gone.......... The fact is that if there was a schism it was between most Republicans against the White Hous. That gap will be closed if the President chooses someone like Thomas or Scalia. Even if the Dems put up a big fight. That will just unite the Conservatives more and Reid will have done the opposite of what you claim he was doing. Reid was played. When all is said and done the White House got Roberts confirmed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court without so much as a shot fired. That was the whole purpose for Meirs nomination and it was successful.
