I don't like it when people celebrate at Birthday parties by literally killing themselves with junk food cakes etc.
I go to Wdw and see people waddle by weighing over 300 lbs and feeding their kids french fries and ice cream as treats and perpetuating that obesity from generation to generation. I'm weird as I think THAT is emotionally deviant behavior that is destroying our country.

    I do not laugh.
I was with my millionaire big shot brother last month at the skating rink in Hyannis and he said "Look Joe at that girl punching herself in the face" I looked over and a retarded girl was doing just that. And my brother REPEATED that and started laughing. I came home and told my wife "How can you respond to that type of human depravity?"
We don't let our kids with his kids unsupervised. Point is Mele----I don't laugh but cry.
This sickness does get me emotional as I usually focus on the positive.

Are blacks banned from events? Do they have seconds secretly and automatically added to their times? Do we even things up by adopting affirmative action at the Olympic trials?

Actually, I gave Gumbel's charge serious thought, and tried to arrive at a reason why there are so few blacks in skiing, boarding, skating and bobsledding. There may be something:

Winter sports are common mainly in northern, rural/suburban, colder regions. Most blacks live in urban, warmer areas where winter sports aren't all that "hot." The other possible reason is money: It is very costly to ski, skate board or sled. I'm a white man who can't afford much skiing myself. Most of the winter athletes are those who have substantial means to pay for their sports , training and equipment. Perhaps winter sports aren't so much white-man's sports as they are rich-man's sports. (Similar trends can be observed in the summer Olympics, where events that demand costly equipment and/or training ... cycling, gymnastics, etc. ... are largely fielded by wealthier, white athletes, while blacks compete more in events like basketball and track and field. Swimming, however, I cannot explain.)

Those reasons aside, I'd still say the MAIN reason is black people just don't have much interest in winter sports. Basketball is a cultural norm in black communities. Hockey is not.

The good news is I have yet to hear a charge of a black athlete who WANTED to participate in a winter sport, but was denied because of race. So on that point, I think Gumbel's veiled charge of racism is way off-base. Perhaps as black peoples' economic situations improve, and as they move to areas where winter sports are more the norm, as is slowly happening where I live in Utah, we will see more black and other minority athletes on the runs, rinks and tracks.

Gumbel does have a point ... a small one. But his tact is poor, and his opinion hardly productive.

    >>I don't know Bryant Gumbel and can't judge his intent. But I do know that if a Caucasian had denigrated a sport or a locale because of the lack of Caucasian athletes/spectators, he or she would have been run out of the sports business as rapidly as Rush Limbaugh was.

So why is Bryant Gumbel still sitting there?

And why haven't the same thought police who savaged Limbaugh demanded Gumbel's removal?<<

    >>The consensus is that Gumbel made an unnecessary, brash, racist statement. Although he obviously has little regard for the Winter Olympics, the reason he gave for all the world to hear was insulting.

Racism rears its ugly head all too often in our society. It's ludicrous to turn something as benign as the Olympic Winter Games into something that's racist. Unfortunately, that's what Bryant Gumbel did and he should be held accountable.<<

Let me say that while I think Mr. Gumbel's comments were just plain wrong, the racially negative comments mentioned in the article are just as wrong!

I, for one, was a bit disappointed that Shani Davis decided not to race in the team pursuit, it did not warrent the stupid comments mentioned.

So congrats to Shani Davis for winning a gold medal for the USA, may you, and many other athletes for the USA keeping winning Gold, along with more Silver and Bronze!

And waiting to hear what Bryant Gumbel has to say about tonight's victories....

Ok back to your name calling and attacking.

To me Bryant Gumble is about as useful to the black community as Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson or Luis Farakhan(sp?) are. Those three cause more harm to the black comminty than any other present day "civil rights" leader.

Black Activists Respond to Bryant Gumbel's Racial Denigration of Winter Olympics

Accessibility, Affordability and Motivation are Requirements for Excelling in Sports; Not Skin Color

    For Release: February 17, 2006

Members of the black leadership network Project 21 are criticizing cable sports commentator Bryant Gumbel for injecting race and politics into remarks about the Winter Olympics, which are currently being held in Torino, Italy. Project 21 members note that the remarks made by Gumbel, who formerly hosted NBC's "Today" morning program prior to his current program on HBO, demean the accomplishments of the competing athletes and stir racial tensions where none should exist.

In the closing monologue of the February 7 edition of HBO's "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel," Gumbel said about the Winter Olympics: "Count me among those who don't care about them and won't watch them... So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world's greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the winter games look like a GOP convention."

Members of Project 21 had this to say about Gumbel's remarks:

"Everyone can understand a person's disdain for a particular sporting event, but for Gumbel to castigate an entire field of athletes who have worked a lifetime in pursuit of a dream - and then injecting race into it - is unforgivable," said Project 21 member Mychal Massie. "HBO, the station that employs Gumbel, features a lot of boxing. Should they be condemned for having too many Mexican boxers or not enough white ones? Should he be condemned for only having one other black on his news team? Following Gumbel's rationale, I would expect the answer to be yes."

"Interest in sporting activities are often dictated by environment. That's why Nordic and European countries have excelled in past Winter Olympics," said Project 21 member Deneen Moore. "It's a simple fact that winter sports are not part of black culture for both geographic and economic reasons. Accessibility, affordability and motivation are key requirements for individuals to excel in sport activities, not the color of one's skin. Mr. Gumbel should be aware of these obvious facts and not try to score cheap racial political points."

I like the Bobsled Gold, there were two Americans working together who won the Gold together :)

    >>That comment is also for today. Davis' story, from a childhood where he was made fun of for wearing tights, to his place in sports lore, will go on. Mr. Gumbel will talk his entire career and say less than Davis did Saturday without a word. And we reporters asked about all the hot topics, from Hedrick to Davis' mother to the controversy over his decision not to race in the pursuit. Davis rolled his eyes. Good for him.

Rumors flew that Davis would blow off the press conference, but he didn't. He mentioned his past hardships, but he also said, "It's not a hard thing for me. I love what I do." He took no opportunity to snipe or whine or lash out. And there were several opportunities to be had. "Regardless of color," he said, "I want to be the best I can be."<<

Yes, but do you remember the HUUUUUUGE stinking deal the media made out of the fact that she's black? It was almost as if they were saying, "we know she doesn't really belong here but, WOW, look at the adversity she must have overcome to get here!" Give me a break. I remember thinking at the time, "what is the big deal if she's black? Or green, or purple, or fuscia for that matter!?" I still feel the same way.
