The high-dudgeon types who will have NO TALKS WHATSOEVER and the moderate ones who sensibly point out that the issue is talks without conditions. It's all semantics and politics now. >>They had no trouble with negotiating arms-for-hostages deals with Iran back in the glory days of the beloved Reagan White House.<< Republicans, along with everyone else, had no idea if this was going on. I really wonder what the reaction would have been if such a proposal had been laid before the American people. (I am sure we can all guess.) >>And working with Saddam Hussein as well.<< He was the recognized head of government, and dealings with him were subject to severe restrictions. Presidents of both parties have dealt directly with many odious characters in history. FDR sat with Stalin, for heaven's sake. The issue should be what circumstance and what conditions would bring about talks with the equally odious leader of Iran.

To me, this was a very shameful chapter of Reagan's presidency, and too often, it gets a total free pass. Meanwhile, some of the same people involved in it (Oliver North, for example) or who didn't have a problem with it are suddenly alarmed that Obama wants to begin some sort of talks with Iran.

Originally Posted By dshyates "Republicans, along with everyone else, had no idea if this was going on." You honestly believe that. Do you think Ollie picked up 40 US Military Tow missles at the army navy store?

I mean, the guy broke the law. And (as far as I know) has never repudiated anything he did. But to some, he's a true, true patriot.
